A friend of mine just took one two days ago and she said she didn't even have to fast for hers, so that may have changed this time. If it hasn't just go in in the AM, make sure that you bring something to do for an hour while you sit. Most places wont let you leave and go back.
The stuff doesn't taste bad at all, it's like super sugar orange soda. At least here it is
You should expect to be bored, jittery, and ready to leave after about 15 minutes of sitting around waiting
lol. It's really just another boring test they need to do! Like ReptiMom said, you will drink the extremely sweet sugary stuff and sit around waiting for them to draw your blood after.
I would keep some snacks in your car for afterwards to try and level everything out. I was super jittery after I did mine from all the sugar and no food! Other than that, the worst part is just sitting around waiting, IMO.
I'm taking mine next week - joy, the midwife thinks she is going to force me to take it twice for no reason.. I think not.
anyway, when I was pregnant with my second, I did it at my 7pm appointment, she gave me the drink a head of time, I drank it about 40 minutes before my appointment, just so I had a little buffer time incase they ran late.
then drove to my appointment. since it was late in the day, I was told to just not eat sugary stuff that day. but at 4pm I stopped eating, just to be sure.
this time, I am going first thing in the morning, and the midwife ordered it to be supervised - I guess because she thinks I won't actually drink it - whatever. so I have to sit there for the hour. Dh is going to drop me off then go get breakfast with the boys then bring something back for me for afterwards.

Yeah, the 1-hour test is a breeze compared to the 3-hour. I didn't even have to fast. I went in at 2 PM, drank the nasty sugar drink, sat there for an hour, and then had my finger pricked and blood tested. It's not too bad. The sugar drink will make you kind of dizzy and jittery, so drink lots of water afterwards and have a healthy snack.

I am lucky that my midwife is not requiring me to take the glucose test as my risks are very very low and I didn't get it with my first 2 pregnancies either.
From what I remember for the one hour I didn't have to fast just had to drink a flat tasting glucose drink (mine was orange kinda like a flat orange pop) and then you wait an hour and get your blood drawn. From everyone I have spoken too they say if given the option go for the orange as the fruit punch taste super nasty and so does I think a grape flavour they sometimes offer. The orange isn't great but could definitely be worse.
My doctor is giving me the drink at my next appointment (~24 weeks). She told me to drink it about an hour before my 28 week appointment. I'll come right in, they'll stick my finger, and that'll be that. It varies at every place! My last pregnancy I had to sit and wait the hour in office. I'm glad I'm not going to have to do that this time around, especially since I'll have my three year old with me.
