I'm sure some of you remember me posting a few days ago about how Elias wouldn't sleep and he screamed all night long and nothing would clam him down. DH and I were beside ourselves. We tried everything we could think of to help him.

We called the Dr. and took in a dirty diaper to test for milk protein allergy. It was negative. But they told us to get gas drops and to do formula for 2 days and see how he did. She wanted to give us a new formula to try as well, something really expensive I guess and that is made for this type of thing. Well we got the drops and stopped the breast feeding that day and the next day and night were a dream! Elias stopped being fussy, crying and screaming. He was a happy baby again. He smiled all the time, started cooing and being happy just sitting and looking around. When he did get fussy ( needing a diaper change or being burped) he was easy to calm. It was like night and day!

So today we go in for his check up from our call about him being colicky, and the Dr. was happy to see him happy and hear that the last 2 nights he slept fine and no screaming at all. But while we were waiting for her to come in (she was running behind) he got hungry and DH forgot to grab the bottle before we left. So stupid me... went and BF him a little to hold him over. Big mistake. After we got home he started screaming and was gassy and pooped and when we changed him it has a bit of mucus in it. Just that little bit had set him back like that. So now he's off BF and is now FF. It's not what we wanted but if it's making him hurt and colicky then we have to do what's best for him. The Dr. said some babies just can't handle it and that even though he tested negative for milk protein, it is obviously something else in my milk making his tummy ache.

I'm hoping he feels better again tomorrow. I'm not happy about the total FFing but I'm happy he's going to get better and stay better. And now we can all sleep.

You could just try to start eliminating foods from your diet to see what it is that's causing the tummy pain. It is rare that a baby would be allergic to your milk and you had him tested so you already ruled that out. It's probably something you're eating that he's sensitive to. But if you really are ok with giving him formula then go for it.

Sorry breastfeeding isn't working out, but I'm glad that Elias seems to be much happier now.

Yeah I'm dittoing Missa BIG time, Harper can't tolerate garlic for instance, I eat garlic she becomes like you described he does. I cut garlic out and presto she's perfect. There are loads of foods that set off certain babies, if you want to breastfeed, maybe contact a lactation specialist who could help you work out what foods could be upsetting his belly.

What is the formula called? The doctor put Mikayla on Alimentum and it is super expensive. So I can definitely sympathize. She's still not a very happy baby though, with the reflux and the colic.

So happy he's doing well and you found a solution. Do what works for you, it's not always best for everyone to BF. Hope you get some much needed rest

Hugs! As long as he is a happy camper and doing well that's all that matters but I do like the suggestion of talking to a lactation consultant if you wanted to try and find out the problem..but either way..Glad that he's doing good!

I'm glad he's feeling better, if you do wish to continue BFing though, I definitely agree with finding a LC that can help you figure out what you're eating that is bothering him!

Glad he's a happy baby again. Sorry you can't bf him like you wished, but happy baby is what matters.

What formula is your baby using? My son could not handle breast milk either. 5 months we tried and eliminated and it just turned into bloody stools. Don't feel bad.

You might try pumping awhile and eliminating if you want to give bfing another go. Teddys triggers were egg and nuts mostly. He has a horrible nut allergy.
