This little dude and me are having a bad breastfeeding day!

In the past 12 hours or so when he wakes up from snoozing to eat, as soon as I pick him up, he starts rooting like crazy and getting really fussy, but if I try to feed him he doesn't want to latch and fights it the whole time. Once he's on he eats well for a few minutes then stops and pops off. I give him a chance to burp and he starts rooting like crazy again but doesn't want back on, and we begin again.

I can't figure out if he's not actually hungry and just wants to suck on something or what the issue is. He's been eating ever 2-3 hours this week and he is still waking up to eat in keeping with that schedule. He won't take a pacifier so I can't test if he just wants to suck on something.

All I can do is keep putting him back on until he absolutely won't latch on anymore or calms down and stops rooting, but I don't think he's been getting good meals all day at all. As soon as I lay him down he passes right out and he's having lots of wet and dirty diapers so I know he's getting enough. I don't understand why he's fussing at the breast so much, he's always been a really good latcher and eater.

Any advice? Is it just going to be one of those days?

He's also getting a lot heavier - I'm wondering if I'm not holding him as well for breastfeeding and maybe he's uncomfortable. As babies get heavier, does anyone find there is a particular position which is easier then others? I've been preferring the cradle hold but maybe I should try something else?

Try the football hold, I really like it as babies grow a little. Side lying is also great, although can be hard the first few times to get a good latch. Good luck! And it may just be one of those days, I would just do your best to comfort him, keep offering and don't let it get you down!

Do you use a boppy pillow when nursing? That may help you be able to support him better.

Rowan has been doing the same thing the past couple of days. I'm most certainly sure that it's because of gas. I can feel bubbles rumbling in his belly. But he keeps doing the fuss, root, fuss at the booby thing. I tried some gripe water, but it was hard to get him to swallow it. So I used hyland's calms forte yesterday. Worked like a charm. I would have preferred to use the hylan's colic tablets but I didn't have any, and the ingredients for both of those are VERY similar. I'll probably give him one a bit earlier tonight instead of waiting for him to get super fussy (he cried for about 3 hours last night ). It helped him sleep a lot; he only woke up once between 9pm and 5am.

Paxton does that when he's gassy or has to poop. We haven't had severe gas issues so I haven't given him anything for it but I agree with Que about getting gas stuff if it's making him that uncomfortable.

I think you are right about him being gassy. He farted a TON last night and this morning and seems to be feeling better. I was gassy yesterday too so I think I may eaten something which bothered him (ahem cornbread). Anyways, I'll let Pearce finish off the rest of that and keep my sticky fingers away from any more corn.

I have found that Pippa will break a latch if she's not comfortable. I found that she prefers My Brest Friend over the Boppy. Also, Gripe Water settles her tummy. Sometimes she wants to be swaddled while she nurses, and I use a Swaddle Me wrap.
