Anyone here feeding their LO strawberries? Elise loves them and I've given her one to bite on for the last few mornings.
Well, 2 days ago I went to change her poopy diaper and it was filled with blood and mucous! Seriously, it looked like a period. I took a pic to document it. Really really scared me. Of course the doc office had closed already (it was close to 5), so I looked up google. Nothing I really found seemed to fit, except maybe food allergies. Greg got home about 30 minutes after I found it (saved the diaper to show him) He suggested waiting to see if it happened again before doing anything. I was ready to head to the ER. I sent my MIL the pic and she questioned what Elise had been eating. She mentioned the strawberries as maybe being too rough on her system.
Yesterday, she had another poop and I was really nervous to open it. There was no blood, thank God, but LOTS of strawberry seeds! So for now, we are assuming it was the berries and laying off them. I've never dealt with this before!
She was her total happy normal self through it all, too. I was worried about the Rotovirus oral vax she'd gotten last week, but it said with intersu...something (?) she'd be in pain along with blood/mucous, so we ruled that out.
Scary!

you certain it was blood, and not just strawberries coming out? At this age food comes out looking pretty much the same as when it went in.

At the same time, blood and mucous usually mean food allergies. My son and daughter got that from my breastmilk if i ate the wrong thing. It's scary, but if you catch it fast, and reverse the problem, its ok. Keep that diaper though.

That is so scary! I honestly do hope it was just strawberry colored poop and you have nothing to worry about.

So scary!

We were specifically asked by our doctor not to feed strawberries to our lo for few months at his four month appt. There little systems cannot digest their hard seeds.

Oh man, how scary! I would've been nervous too. My first thought, like the others, was the strawberry color coming out, but then, I notice if a strawberry soaks in water overnight, it turns pink or white, which you'd think might happen in digestion also. I would still wonder if there was some blood in there if it were like a period...

Hopefully it's solved by avoiding strawberries for now. She might still be sensitive to the acidity...

I wonder if maybe it was some strawberry, but I don't know, it really was mucousy and had a weird smell. I've never had a kiddo with allergies, and definitely haven't seen anything like that before. In fact, I even called my cousin and asked, "is this a GIRL thing?", lol. Happily though it hasn't happened again since that one time. Horrible!
I didn't keep the diaper, but I do have the pic on my phone. I considered posting it here, ha!

That is scary...glad everything turned out okay! I know that strawberries are a pretty common allergy culprit in children.

I've given Emily strawberries in her mesh feeder a few times. She didn't have any kind of reaction and I definitely don't remember seeing it in her poop but then again her poop doesn't seem to be affected by what she eats yet. It is always some shade of green, either yellow green or hunter green, no matter what she eats.

Just an Fyi, but both my children have gotten bloody stools from allergies, and it took weeks to build up to that point, and even then it was only streaks of blood.. not like a period at all.

Strawberries are much more acidic then you would think and most babies don't tolerate them at all until well over a year old, they can give really bad diaper rashes so I am not surprised she had a reaction. Glad she is doing ok!

Thanks so much guys. She's doing great! Maybe I over exaggerated about the amount of blood, or wasn't clear enough. It definitely wasn't a gusher, or like day 1 or 2 of a period, it was more like towards the end (?), more than a streak, mixed with mucous. Probably about a quarter-sized amount, spread-out a bit. (Asked DH to help with the description, since I was not that great explaining). At any rate, it had to be the strawberries!

So glad she is okay and it only was the one diaper!! I read to stay away from berries and acidic fruit until they are over 9 months to a year. Most babies seem to be fine with them way sooner but I don't mind waiting, Micah doesn't know what he is missing yet lol
