So, I am starting to get myself as prepared as possible for postpartum. Now, I have always been a tampon girl, ever since I was a teenager. Now, I know that I can't use them for postpartum bleeding, which stinks. So I am trying to get an idea of what I should use.

Is there any specific type/brand of pad that you preferred over others?

Thanks!!

The ones from the hospital LOL They gave me a ton when we were discharged and then I bought the super big ones at the store. I didn't bleed for incredibly long though.

Buy extra long ones with wings. I preferred Always, because they are thinner. However, sometimes the hospitals have these ice pack/pad combos that are awesome.

Use what hospital supplied and then always but now that I have a midwife instead of ob she doesnt recommend using always since they are dry weave so I have picked up kotex instead. Not really sure why they dont want us using anything with dry weave...

Always with wings. They are thin and I feel less like I am wearing a freakin diaper! Not that there is anything wrong with Depends or huge pads, but they make me feel so very unattractive. After giving birth I want to do everything I can to make myself feel normal again and as pretty as possible

Brittany, I am curious why dry weave shouldn't be used as well. I haven;t heard that before.

Yeah anything for a heavy flow and with wings. If you BF exclusively you will bleed for a much shorter time.

I have not been there, but my AF can be raging so I am assuming I will bleed a lot this time. I bought the Always Overnight maxis-the kind that are in the dark blue and purple bag with purple wrappers.

Warning though, you will laugh if you have never seen one of these before! They are really long and have a paddle-like end to them to help cover your behind for leaks. They work amazingly well though if it is for a heavy flow and you want to feel totally protected. I bought a pack of the walmart brand of the same kind too just to compare.

I've got about 3 different kinds of pads I have left over from previous deliveries, a friend told me always infinity are really good, and they worked really well for my heavy periods, so I have some of those. I also have a bunch of really thick cheap pads, and I plan on bringing home as many as I can from the hospital.

for the first few days I like to put a chux pad folded up in my underwear then a pad on top of that, it gives full belly button to top of the butt crack protection. once the bleeding slows down a bit then I just do pads.

this was definitely not the case for me! I bled for 6 weeks straight! I thought it was never going to stop!

I think everyone has given great suggestions on pad types! ^^I actually used exactly what she said^^

Always Ultra Night because they are so much longer or Kotex Night for the same reason. They are the most comfortable I think and the new Always we get here is made of a super soft material, so great on achy lady bits.

I have extremely heavy flow when it comes to AF (so much so that if I bleed for more than 2-3 days, I start getting sick) and I prefer Always with wings... they work great when moving around. With DS#2, I stopped bleeding randomly too soon and then suddenly would have gushes, the Always pads absorbed everything where another kind (can't remember the brand), ended up getting blood all over the place. Definitely use up what the hospital gives you first but then buy a small thing of a couple different brands and see which you prefer. Also make sure you wear underwear you don't mind throwing away after in case you have break through bleeding (after you think you're done) or in case a brand doesn't work well for you.

I can't remember what i used last time but i think it was always. I know i bought some really thick ones and those felt horrible, like i was wearing diapers. I plan to buy the long ones with wings and hope that does the trick. I hear ya on being a tampon girl! Luckily there are very few times in our lives we'll have to use pads.

once your bleedng has slowed, be careful that you don't overdue it because that can bring on heavy bleeding out of NO where! You may even want to buy a thing of thin pantiliners to wear for a few days after your bleeding has stopped just to be sure

I am buying whatever I have a coupon for (which is typically Always or Target Up and Up brand) and plan to use the hospitals pads as long as I can.

I know its crazy, but I read somewhere to use Depends for a few days postpartum for the bleeding. So I tried it with my first and I will do it again with this one. They just felt less bulky than the hospital pads and mesh underwear AND they held the ice packs really well. I just used them for a few days and then switched over to a normal pad. I second Lyz that you will probably want some panty liners for awhile after you seem to stop bleeding. It can kick back up out of nowhere!

I agree on the always brand. Also don't by scented ones!! Trust me! I didn't get a chance to buy any with my last baby because he decided to surprise us early, so I had to send dh to get them. I told him exactly what I wanted, but I forgot to mention unscented. It was horrible. It smells bad enough as it is. Adding a flowery smell is not a good idea. I used them until dh could get back to the store to get me more, and then I threw those things away. It was so gross.

I'm not positive, but I BELIEVE the reason they don't want you to get the dry weave pads is incase you have to have stitches. They can get stuck in the dry weave, and lets just say that would NOT be a comfortable situation!

I always get the always brand, but I also have been told reciently the Always Infinity was REALLY good and so is the idea of the depends. I will be trying both in hopes to find something that works well. If not then I'll just go back to my overnight always with wings.

I second the recommendation for throw-away undies. I need to go get a package of underwear that I won't mind ruining. My underwear I wear any other time are too nice to want to bleed on.

I always buy a package of (6) solid black cotton undies to be used for the heavy bleeding after giving birth. Plus, you can wash and re-use them and still not see blood stains on them. When the bleeding is finished you can just toss them. Or if you are regularly a heavy bleeder you could keep them as period panties, lol. The plus to them is that they are black and after washing them the blood doesn't stain them.
