I am sure I will know when the baby drops by all the symptoms that are discussed that you feel with it. But HOW does the baby drop? I know his head is right up against my cervix now. Does that meant that my cervix first has to soften and I start to dilate for him to move past it? Or does my cervix move lower, allowing him to as well?

My doc said he was very low at the last appointment, and I saw on the us where the top of my cervix was and how his head was right there. So I am going off of my observations, not the doctors! She didn't say whether or not he was engaged or anything. Can anyone kinda clarify that process for me? I just find symptoms when I look it up.

I honestly have no idea!! I'm not too familar with dropping and what it means other than knowing baby is low. I feel pretty confident that Kylie has dropped because my belly looks much lower, she feels low and i have to pee even more frequently than before!

I know it feels like he is low and I need to pee all the time, but I haven't felt a noticeable difference since everything down there hurts anyways. lol, at least I haven't felt the bowling ball affect people speak of, and I have had people say that it looks like he is dropping or getting lower. That was why I wondered how it happened to see if he could even get any lower, lol! I mean, if he were to go out of the cervix that would mean I would be in labor, right? I feel like an idiot for asking but I don't want to assume he has dropped then get a surprise one morning! lol

I have no idea how it works, bu I know with my second, he was "right there" at my check the day before I went into labor, but my belly still looked normal.

the next morning I woke to contractions and DH took my last belly pic before we left for the hospital and when I saw it later it looked like he should have been falling out he was so low!

But I was still only 3cm, I think the station was lower like -1 or something instead of -2 or -3. Just further into the pelvis.

I think "dropping" tends to be a gray area! You might be able to tell, but you might not!

Since my baby boy has been sooo low my entire pregnancy and I have a short torso I don't think that I will notice him dropping. It is a good question though I dont think mine can get any lower lol till i'm pushing him out lol

"Explaining Stations: -4 is just coming into the pelvis, +4 station is on the perineum or ready to be born. When the top of the fetal head (or other presenting part as in a breech presentation), arrives at the level of the ischial spines, the baby is said to be at 0 station or "engaged.”"

So, if your Dr has checked you they should have in their notes (or should have told you) what station you're at. If you're at a -4, -3, -2, or -1, you have dropped, and the baby's head is now in your pelvis.

In regards to your cervix, my guess is that the firmer and higher up your cervix is will determine your baby's station. He may be right at your cervix, but if you're not effacing at all then you're probably at a higher station (thus the baby's head is higher up in your cervix), but then as you thin out and your cervix gets shorter the baby's head will drop further into your pelvis, putting you at a lower station, until you're completely thinned out and your baby's head is engaged in the birth canal at a 0 station. That's my guess based on other things I know, though. Make sense?

Here's a good chart that I found regarding these things:
