I just called an OB that my best friend referred me to. They told me that the doctor doesnt usually see you for the first time until you are about 10 weeks .. because he "cant really hear the heartbeat until around then anyways" .. My first appointment isn't until March 19!! Is this normal? I don't feel good about this at all.

I know when I was pregnant with ds I didn't go in until I was 9wks but i didn't find out I was pregnant until 6wks so I didn't have to wait too long. I'm not sure if that was just the first opening they had or if they always wait that long. I sure hope they don't this time cause then i'd have to wait 5 more wks!!

That is very normal...most OBs don't see patients for the first time until they are 8-12 weeks. I just called the place that I'd like to go this morning to find out when they typically see patients, and I was also told that my first appointment would be between 8 and 10 weeks.

It is also true that the heartbeat can't be heard with a doppler until around 10 weeks, although you can see/hear it around 6-7 weeks with a vaginal ultrasound.

I wonder if they would just do bloodwork to make sure your HCG is okay? I think it would be worth calling and asking for sure!

Thanks ladies. It just seems sooo far away

My roommate is about 4 months pregnant and she has a month supply of prenatal vitamins she let me have. So I've already started those. I guess I just wanted to see the doctor to make me feel more comfortable. I'll just keep buying dollar store tests and peeing on them in the mean time.

Very normal. My OB brings patients in at 8 wks to do a "teaching" and then you have your first real appt at 12 weeks where they listen to the HB with the doppler. He doesn't even do the first US until 14 weeks. This drove me crazy with Ryan. I was so anxious and excited, I wanted it done NOW!

yeah this is more normal than not to wait until 8-10 weeks for first OB appt. My OB doesn't see anyone until close to 9weeks unless there's a problem (so you don't want an appt earlier, it's not good news).

it's easy to feel like it's odd though on JM...some OBs do appts early to check betas, etc. And those of us who are under the care of an RE, the REs do several early appts including a couple early u/s, but that's not the norm IRL...

It sounds pretty normal. With my ob's office you can get in for your initial nurse visit right away then you have your first visit with the ob 2 weeks after that.

I'll be 9 weeks at my first ob visit... I could have gotten in sooner with a different dr. but I wanted to wait to see mine.

I know it seems like forever... the first trimester drags on regardless of your plans

My OB sets the first visit for between 8-10 weeks as well. My first visit with my son was at 9 weeks, and with this baby it'll be 8 weeks.

It is totally normal except for cases like mine where you are considered high risk to some extent (fibroid, pregnant after 35, past ectopic). I have my appt next week because of my history. Didn't have any problem with dd's pregnancy but they still treated me like I was going to fall apart any minute. The good side is I got to see her (ultrasound) so many times. Kept all the films too. Now that I even 2 years older, I cannot wait to see how they'll treat me

where i live they don't even do an ultrasound until 20 weeks!! witch i think is RIDICULOUS! my last pregnancy ended in stillbirth because my sons heart developed outside of his chest witch would of been seen at a 10 week scan, however this time im considered high risk so i do go for an ultrasound at 6 weeks and again at 10 then between 16-19 with the specialists. also they dont do 1st prenatal appointments till 12 weeks or after and dream on about them trying to find a heartbeat until after 14 weeks.
