I know absolutely NOTHING about cloth diapers other than I am considering them for this baby. The main reason is cost. Can anyone tell me a little more about them? I am just not sure how well they work and the leakage etc. I am not too sure that my in-laws will be gung-ho on the cloth thing. They will watch the baby when I return to work. I would just like some experienced Mommies opinions and information?
I'm planning to CD but I don't actually have any experience, so I guess I'm not much help. I can say that I plan to get a variety of cloth diapers so I can find out what works for us. I don't want to buy a ton of one brand and it end up not working for us. I also plan to use cloth wipes and will make some of those myself (if I can get DH to dig my sewing machine out of the closet for me).
Kristenpie and a few other BTDT mamas have lots of info on this.. We talked about it awhile back. Ive been researching the whole thing and I have decided to use the GRoVIA/Brobaby line of shells. With a shell it normally stays clean and the insert is on top of the lining so when baby needs changed you replace that part only, so one shell can last all day. They also have biodegrable inserts that compost and are flushable so its like have an eco disposable and you re use the cover. Mine are the one sizse hybrid so they fit newborn to toddler
Pocket diapers like Bum Genius the insert goes into a pocket in between the liner and inner liner so those you replace the liner and Diaper covering each time= more laundry but some like this set up.
there is fitted diapers that are not waterproof so those you have to put a cover on over the fitted dieaper ( think cloth diaper with tabs that looks like a disposable) those are not one size fits all so you have to buy newborn small etc.
All in ones or AIO where he insert is sewn in ( you can add extra doublers or inserts too) when baby goes you have to wash then line or sun dry the whole diaper.
bumGenius is a great company for cloth diapers. If you go to cottonbabies.com, you'll see they have a lot of options. Or check out etsy.com, they have some really cute ones! Use a CD with elastic around the legs, they will keep in leaks and blowouts even better than sposies. There are lots of other CDing mamas here that can give more detailed advice, but today is a hectic day! Checkout the BG freetime diaper though, it's amazing.
Pocket diapers and All In Ones will be very similar to disposable diapers, pockets look like swim diapers and have a little opening where you stuff the absorbant inserts and when they have been used you shake them out in to the laundry bad to wash as 2 pieces. They are good because you can add extra absorbency as the kid grows. All In Ones look exactly like disposables, it's one piece that you just throw in the wash, but they take longer to dry and you can't add absorbency.
There are prefolds like the old school cloth diapers with pins and snaps, but for starters, especially if you are intimidated, pockets are great. Bum Genius is very popular and has a one size diaper that will last through potty training. That is what we will be using. You'll need 24 or so to start out with so its a big chunk of change to start but that's it and they last for years. You can also buy cloth wipes and solutions so you can reuse everything and not have to budget diaper needs each month.
Let me know if you have any questions. There is a cloth board here on JM too. diaperswappers.com has a good question and answer board as well.

all of this!!
I love my cloth and have less leaks with those than sposies.
sounds like before you make a big purchase you'll have to get your mom on board. If she's the one that's going to be watching the baby is she gonna put up a big fight? That suck to spend all the money and she say no then have to buy disposable ones.
^^^ I agree. I've been down that path with my own mom and it's not fun. lol! She refused to change a cloth diaper so I ended up with buying sposies and cloth and it just was not beneficial at all! I have a TON of almost new boy diapers that I need to get rid of now. Geez.

Mom to 4 beautiful girls, 4 handsome little guys and our princess....
My hubby was so anti-cloth at first. In fact we didn't start until 4 months with my 2 year old for that reason. But once he realized that they are not bad, he was onboard. And he is the one who watching the toddler while I am at work.
My advice would be to buy a few of each kind at first to see what you like and what works. Not all diapers work for all children. I love prefolds, but DH hates them, so I have some fitteds and pockets for him.
We will be CD'ing with the BumGenius 4.0's. We are buying them about 6 at a time, and my MIL has bought us 2, so we have 8 so far. It is expensive, but we decided it made more sense to always have diapers there and that disposables are such a waste. I don't care if there is more laundry....a trip to the laundry room is easier than a trip to the store Also, since I will be taking care of her the majority of the time, I'm not worrying about someone not wanting to change a cloth diaper. We have, however, bought a few packs of newborn disposable diapers to get us through the first week or two.
I have 4 new bum genius I was going to put on eBay but thought I would ask if anyone wanted to buy them from here first. They have been ore washed to be ready but I decided to do the shell/ inserts vs pocket. They are the all on size snaps with the application butterfly closure 4.0. Includes an insert and doubler for each. I have two buttercup yellow and two light green , so both gender neutral. Pm me if interested.
