So being a first time mom I have a couple of questions..

Where would you say is the best place to register at?

Also, what are some really important things to register for? I know the basics, but I am sure there will be things I can't or wouldn't even think of.

Were doing ours today.

Hey,

I'm a first time mom, too. I have no advice regarding particulars, but I can say we'll be registering at Babies 'r Us and Burlington Coat Factory-Baby Depot. Both have an excellent selection of baby items.

We have already purchased the furniture for the baby's room, but do plan on putting things like a swing, Boppy pillow (which everyone swears by), crib set (blanket, sheets, etc), bathtub, a pack 'n play, baby bullet (a magic bullet to make baby food), etc on it. We're going to have some more "expensive" items and less expensive, too.

Can't wait to see the responses you get from the pros who have BTDT!

:-)

We registered at Babies R Us and Walmart. Basically, what we have done is throw things on there that we weren't really particular about. (My hubby was anal retentive about the car seat so we took care of that ourselves.) Some onesies, bath products, diapers, a walker, a baby tub and some hooded towels and what not. We tossed a few expensive items in there as well as the little oddities that can be forgotten in all the excitement. Popular shower gifts in my experience have been grooming kits, monitors, safety kits, and layette sets. I would throw those on there just so you dont end up with 10-12 of the same thing like I did with my first born.

You can also use it as a personal checklist. Just throw everything on there you intend to get, and what you buy, delete. What everyone else buys it will auto check off (if they go by your registry name)

That's just my personal experience. I am looking forward to see what the other mommies suggest a well <3

I think you can go on Babies R Us website, but I'm also pretty sure they give you a checklist when you register. The thing that saved us is what I call "zipper jammies." Footed sleepers that zip instead of snap. Those snaps are a PIA in the middle of the night when you're half asleep. I also recommend the soft terry burpcloths instead of the cloth diaper type ones, Mylicon, and Boudreaux's Butt paste.

I registered on myregistry.com this time, because you can add stuff from any store that is online! I've heard the return policies at BRU are easier to deal with than Target. As for what to put on it, I think it is probably easier to do the registry, then share the link with us and we can tell you if we notice anything you're missing

Thanks everyone! And good idea Sarah, I'll do that. I'm probably gonna go with Amazon.com as my registry..The selection is huge and like you said it has things from every different kind of store.

Just make sure you go to BRU or someplace similar to test out the carseat and stroller to make sure they fit in your car before registering for a specific one. Have fun!

some things to think about... some places have better prices than others. Like Target and Amazon consistantly have good prices compared to some other baby places.

But you should think about what is convenient to people who would be giving you things. For me, the two stores that were close to most of my friends and my out-of-state family were Babysrus and Target. I compared prices and styles on some items and chose which list to place what on based on that. It worked out well.

Also, if people are willing to give you gift cards, gift cards are AWESOME at a place that you know you'll use.

People tend to give you a lot of cute clothes, but you may not need all of that... so if they give you a gift receipt or leave the tags on the clothes, you can return it. (You can return stuff new with tags even if it doesn't have a receipt! you'll just get a store credit,... so you just have to figure out where they got it from, which once you start shopping, you'll start to recognize what stores carry what... )
You also may want to exchange some clothes for the same outfit in a different size. A lot of the time people give you a lot of newborn clothes, and then you have too many of that one size...

I think both Babysrus and target registries have a "suggested must have list" for your registry, but you don't really really need all that stuff. If you have a friend who has recently given birth, they can help you shop your registry and give you advice. Also there are lists online if you google it to see how many of what you need. People tend to say you need about 10 of each size range of outfit, roughly. And make sure if you DO register for outfits that you do the math to figure out what size your baby will be in what season, roughly. (ie, 3 months size in December...? 9 month size in summer?)

Also,... some things you may be able to get at a thrift or consignment store, see what your options are before settling your list. I got a bouncer, a bumble seat, a playplace and a bunch of clothes from a consignment store for almost new for cheaper than it would have been new. (just try not to buy too many clothes yourself as people love to give you clothes...)

Stuff that was/is on my list:
pacifiers (you may want to try a set of more than one kind to see what kind the baby likes...) We got
Philips AVENT BPA Free Soothie Pacifier and MAM pacifiers. Both brands were sworn by by friends (different friends for each brand...)

car seats
breast pump (you might not need this?)
changing pad and cover(s)
hooded towel(s)
bottles (my friend swears by Dr Browns)
Boudreaux's Natural Butt Paste
lots of washcloths and burpcloths
receiving blankets (flannel and muslin kind)
stroller toy (something that crinkles and rattles, etc.)
soothing sleep sound machine (like the sleep sheep or something like that)
one of those blankets that has a stuffed animal head on it. It's like a security blanket/animal
some type of hamper/storage bin (can be fabric or foldable, etc.)
diaper genie
newborn formula (even if you plan to breast feed, you may have issues at first, it'll take some stress off to have a little around already)
swaddling blankets and "sleep sacks"
some type of soft nightlight, so you don't have to turn the light on when you go into the baby's room at night
diaper bag and one of those on the go diaper changing mats
sheets for your crib!
mobile for your crib (you could also get another for over the changing table/pad)
lots of bibs! (try to find a value pack, etc)
socks (you can get cute ones that look like shoes, since baby wont' be walking for a while if you want)
bouncer
swing
bumble seat
boppy nursing pillow or something similar
baby monitor
humidifier (they have CUTE ONES!)
bath tub (not really necessary, but it's useful and so cute)

The trouble with the bouncers and swings is that they only use them for X amount of time... but most people swear by them during that time. (ie that they wouldn't have lived without it)

Make sure that you have a good mix of online and store items, so that it's easy for people to shop... and make sure that you have a good mix of price ranges. A few people might want to all pitch in and buy you one big item like a swing or a carseat, etc... so give them that option if they want to. While most people will want like $10-$25 approx items to buy you.
LIke you said you'll go with amazon, but you may want to give people an "in store" option if they want to shop in person. Some people don't want to pay shipping or they want to see the items in person. You can register at more than one place.

You can research online what brands are good and check reviews.
Most people say that Chicco and Graco are the best car seats. So just pick one you like within those brands and you should be fine (perhaps check reviews on that individual seat before buying...) You do need to decide whether you want to go with a 22 lb or a 30+ lb carseat. You can see on our forum my previous thread debating that. There are plusses either way.
I know the Fisher-Price swings and bouncers, etc, are well loved by several of my friends.

Babies R Us will give you a check list and the neat thing is, if you scan an item with the scanner they give you, you can read the online reviews!! That helped us tremendously in making decisions, especially when it came to the monitor! The one we originally liked ended up having really bad reviews, so we got one with better reviews. We also did Target and an Amazon Wishlist, to which I am continuously adding online! It's so nice to just be able to add stuff I see on amazon to the wishlist!!
Have fun!!

We registered at BRU and Target with DS. My advice is to put all sorts of items on there - big stuff as well as little things. You never know what people will buy!

I love the Amazon Wish list, because you can do the "I want that" Button and add stuff from basically ANYWHERE on the web.

I am one who swore by my swing but if you get one, MAKE SURE IT PLUGS INTO THE WALL, not just batteries, because they suck the life right out!! Also, put some D sized batteries on your list. Just about everything takes those lol

Register for what you need the most, what you know you need help getting - in other words, what you are hoping to not have to buy? That sounds bad, but I think you know what I'm getting at. This is baby #2, and I'm having a shower and registry because I didn't have a shower for my first. So, for us, I'm registering for things like stroller (double stroller), cloth diapers, diaper pail, etc, etc. My son is 3 1/2 so we don't have much, except what we've bought and clothes.

Just looked at your registry! I would DEFINITELY register for more than one changing pad cover... 3-4 of them is ideal. Babies pee on them and have blowouts all. the. time. I would also recommend putting a 12 pack of deluxe prefold diapers (cotton, not gauze) on there to use as burp cloths. Put newborn and size 1 diapers of your choice on there, along with wipes. You will also need a bottle brush and bottles if you plan to ever pump and feed. It isn't a bad idea to think of putting plastic bowls, bibs, and sippy cups on there too since most babies start solids around 6 months. And you will definitely want at least one pack of long sleeved or short sleeved onesies (depending on your climate). A nasal aspirator, baby nail clippers, and a good thermometer should also be on there. Here are a few more things you might think of adding (not necessarily these prints on the things where you have choices):

Amazon.com: JJ Cole Diapers and Wipes Pod, Multi Circle: Baby
Amazon.com: Bumkins 3 Pack Waterproof SuperBib: Baby
Amazon.com: Carter's Keep Me Dry Waterproof Fitted Quilted Crib Pad, White: Baby
Amazon.com: HALO SleepSack 100% Organic Cotton Wearable Blanket, Green/Blue Dots, Medium: Baby

I would use a site like thethingsiwant.com so you can pull things from lots of sites.

Things that come to mind...
woombie swaddlers (pricey but you are good with 2 or 3 and they are better than velcro swaddlers)
video baby monitor (we are buying one this time, wished we had a video one with my boys)
baby swing
baby bouncer chair
co-sleeper or crib sheets
washable changing pads if you co-sleep and don't use a changing table (these are so great! we went through so much pee on our bed until my mother in law bought us these)
breastflow bottles if you plan on pumping
gerber cloth diapers to use as burp rags or to help with breastfeeding issues
baby booties (hanna andersson has ones I love, my babies never kept traditional socks on)
baby soap (love burts bees)
white noise machine (we have 2 of these, they are great http://www.amazon.com/Conditioner-Ma...+noise+machine)
crib soother with lights and motion

I'll come back with more later!
