I have heard when they are very young that the bumpers can increase SIDS. But since I don't plan on having him sleep in there until he is a bit older,do you still think it's a problem?
I can't find any good evidence leaning one way or another. So just curious as to what everyone else is doing.
(The crib bumpers that come with his nursery set are ADORABLE. But I don't want to pay the extra money for the bigger set that includes them, If they are dangerous and I can't use them.)

You couldn't pay me to use traditional bumpers, they aren't worth the risk of SIDS and suffocation. It's a shame because they're cute, but yeah. No thanks.
I do use mesh bumper pads though. They are completely breathable (you can see through them) but they completely protect babies from getting legs and arms caught in the bars of the crib. They're fantastic! Love them!
I think Jolly Jumper makes some, and a few other brands.

Same here.
We also use mesh ones...I think the brand is Breathable Baby and you can get them at Target. Besides arms and legs, they also keep pacis in the crib

Thank you peimum for my amazing siggy
I feel traditional bumpers are not only unsafe but it limits the baby's view. The can't see anything but the ceiling and the wall. With the mesh bumper the baby can see all around which is good in my opinion.
We have one, because it came with our bedding set. We used it for decoration in the nursery when he was still sleeping in the bassinet/our bed. It didn't stay in the crib for longer than a few months though, because as soon as he could roll over, even though he was hardly ever sleeping in there, we took it out. If I were going to use a bumper with a child who was in the crib a good portion of the time, I would use a mesh one. I like having one, because Josiah was always sticking his feet through the slats and getting them stuck.

We just use it for decor then once baby is in the crib I take it out. We don't use the crib tell baby is 4 months old. We did co-sleeping tell then with my DD. We have a cradle this time around or we might do co-sleeping again so he won't be in there with the bumper.

I don't see where they can hurt in the VERY beginning, but once they start rolling over, I'd definitely take it out We don't even purchase the bumpers to sets because we just don't use them. One of my girls got tangled up in one of them one time (and it was REALLY secure), so we haven't used them since. Babies find the strangest ways to get tangled up in stuff....lol. So it's just not worth the risk to us. In the beginning though (especially with your first when you want that "completed beautiful" nursery, I don't see where it can hurt Definitely take them out when he starts wiggling around in there though!

Definitely on board with the breathable bumper. I prefer it to none at all. Onve baby starts moving around those little arms and legs seem to find the slots in the crib ALL the time! And it also keeps binkies in the crib for us, well, most of them anyway..my daughter likes to reach her arm out and drop them out of the crib, and get mad about it lol.
They are also a big issue when the babies get to pulling up position and can stand on the bumpers to try and climb up and out. But I guess if you lower the position of the crib at that point, you should be ok. We only used a bumper once and ended up taking it out because I was scared of him climbing out. He did sleep better with it in there though.

What's the breathable bumper? That sounds like something that may be more beneficial. One thing I can tell you is that we have new cribs and they have TINY slats in them where they are deemed "safe"....but my boys STILL find ways to get their legs caught in the slats! My husband said they should make some kind of bumper that sits underneath the mattress so that they can't get their limbs caught in the slats, but they aren't a suffocation hazard either. I whole heartedly agree with that! One time, Aiden got his leg caught in the slat of the crib so bad that I thought my husband was going to have to get his saw out to cut his leg out! I have pictures of his legs once we finally got him out of the thing....it was horrible! Of course, these are both cribs (same ones for Evan and Aiden) that were purchased BRAND NEW when Evan was born and have not been recalled. The good thing is...they can't get their heads caught in there...the bad news is....they could still potentially get a limb caught. ugh. They just need to make box cribs! ha!
We had one with #1, which we used once he was over the age of 1. I didn't get one this time around, if we really want to use the same one, we can, even though it wont match
I have tried all of the bumpers that are on the market! The traditional ones are way too unsafe dont even waste your money on them. The breathable ones are not worth the $ either. I had two of those and the first one lasted a week before my daughter put a hole in it with her leg. The other one was a tie on one and the ties broke the first time I put it on the crib. Plus, they are not secure and slide up and down way too easy. I found that the wonder bumpers are the best! They are the safest, last the longest, and are way adorable!!! You should look into them.
I will admit, don't throw anything at me PLEASE. I used one with both girls, BUT over the last three years it seems like there has been a lot more accidents from them. I have one that came with my set, but like others have said I am going to put it in the crib while he is sleeping in our room, but as soon as we move him we are taking it out! It is not worth the risk and how bad would I feel if something happen to my baby because I wanted the bed to look cute? Not worth it at all!!!
Yep, we have the breathable bumper too. It doesn't look pretty, but it feels safe
I've customized mine with coordinated fabric to match the bedding. I recovered the satin edges and it made them look a bit cuter!
The one thing I didn't like about my first set was that they were made for a crib with a drop side... which I didn't have. So I had to fiddle around with them to make them fit a bit better.
I read other posters replies who said they were worried about them standing on bumpers, and that the mesh ones come undone easily and fall down. I can't say I had those problems with mine... they're thin enough that, if baby stands on them, they just crumple down and don't provide any additional height to step on to. And as for them being undone easily, I bought velcro ones and sewed extra snaps on to secure them additionally when I pulled them tight. They NEVER came undone, and never slipped or crumped down on their own. Worked like a charm.
I did check out the wonder bumpers someone else mentioned - those are so cute! But i'd still use the mesh bumpers since they can't get their arms and legs caught close to the mattress between the slats. Padding the slats would be really useful if I was worried about heads being bumped though! My first never had that problems, I'm not sure how common that sort of injury is?
I have been thinking about whether or not to buy crib bumbers. I may just buy the mesh ones, I didn't even know they were available so I am glad I read this post!
