I am having my very first baby, and my midwife's birthing assistant gave me some AWESOME advice that I wanted to share with you!

For the first week or so, the poop is really sticky and it can really hurt the baby to wipe and wipe and wipe to get it off...so she told me that putting olive oil on baby's bottom after every diaper change will make it SO easy to get the poo off, resulting in a happy mommy and baby! It's totally natural and safe :-)

The nurses told me something similar when I had #1... except they said to use petroleum jelly. It worked great! It created a really thick barrier that the meconium couldn't get through, and when it came time for a diaper change... it all just slid right off!

Interesting. I don't remember the meconium being hard to deal with at all either though. one or two baby wipes was all it took, and no real rubbing...

I'm sure it depends on the baby, if the baby doesn't have an issue with meconium, the advice is not needed :-) For babies who have a lot of sticky meconium, it's good advice.
