We picked up the twin mattress from my Mom's today and started rearranging the nursery. We quickly realized that there is NO WAY we can get enough storage unless we get Josiah a bed with enough drawers that we can get rid of his dresser, and possibly loft space underneath. It is going to be TIGHT in there. I have NO idea where all the toys are going to go, and his bookshelf is currently in the hallway because it doesn't have a home yet!!! We'll get there, but this is taking much more thought to get "right" than I expected!
*See my next post in this thread for updated pics of our "work in progress"*

Okay, keep in mind this is a WORK IN PROGRESS!! We have not rearranged the pictures on the walls yet since rearranging the furniture, the holes where furniture used to be bolted into the wall need to be patched and painted, we have not picked the bedframe for Josiah's bed, or the bedding (got him pale blue sheets today), and we still have to hang the valance that is currently draped over the crib! Not to mention the fact that NONE of the toys have made their way back into the room... if I could have a toy free room, I'd say it would look just about perfect! Still pondering how we're going to find the storage space we need for all the stuff that is currently in boxes in the living room and office!!
The layout of our house is kind of funny... this is the view from the hallway looking into the boys room. In later pics you will see another doorway, which connects their room to our master bedroom. You can only access the master bedroom (an addition to the original house) by either walking through the boys bedroom, or walking through a 3/4 bath that is attached to the den and also the master.
The far right corner of the room, doorway to the master bedroom:
Walking from the master bedroom into the boys room (there is a walk in closet not pictured on the left hand side:
Another pic from the hallway door. The blue piece of furniture that you see peeking out of the bottom of the pic is Josiah's 3 drawer dresser, which is right next to the entrance to the walk in closet. His new sheets are the same color as the bluish colored blanket that you see on his bed in this pic. It matches one of the pinstripe colors in our curtain valance, which is draped over the crib in this pic!
This is the bedding I plan to eventually buy for the twin bed...probably just the duvet cover, since I already bought pale blue sheets.
Here is a closer up pic of the crib bedding. We have the polka dotted sheets as well as a cream colored sheet that has the alphabet letters scattered in all the colors you see on the the polka dotted sheet.

Aww, it will all work out! I'm sorry it's taking more time than you thought. I'm not super thrilled with our nursery lay out either; the room is really little and I'm stressed about where I will find enough storage! So far I don't have anywhere to put stuffed animals or books yet. DH keeps saying he wants to build shelves instead of buying some but there are always more important projects needing to be done.
So are you thinking of getting Josiah a bunk bed with storage underneath? Did I understand that correctly? That would really help with the space issue...
I think it looks nice so far and I'm sure you will find a way to fit it all in there.

I am sure it will all come together beautifully. Necessity is the mother of invention I have to figure mine out too soon although baby will probably stay in bassinet in our room for a while.

I totally understand how you feel. We have a tiny nursery to work with and my DD does have her own room but its a tight fit too. Somehow we figured all out and made it work in the end though.
I love seeing the photos and I can't wait to see the finished product.

We're going to take our time finding just the right bed for Josiah. It will either be one with lots of drawers underneath, or a low loft bed, because we HAVE to have the storage underneath. We will have baby in a bassinet in our room for awhile, but like to have the option of the crib too, even though we didn't use it much at all with Josiah.

Our boys will share a pretty big room with a big walk in closet and it's still cramped so I feel your pain. Love the bedding (I almost bought that for DS!)

Don't worry- it will work out! We will be having 7 of us in a one floor, 3 bedroom house with NO toy room. That means that the 3 boys and all their clothes and toys will be in one room and the two girls with all their toys and clothes will be in another. You have to get creative with storage, but it all works out in the end (plus it helps you "simplify" so you don't have too much stuff!).
I think the layout of the boys' bedroom looks nice!

I'm feeling really good about what we accomplished this weekend! Since taking the pictures above, here is what else has happened:
1. We hung the valance in the nursery
2. I added a small bookcase and the doll cradle next to Josiah's bed so that he could have some of his favorite books and stuffed animals in the room.
3. I got all of the toys put away in temporary places so that they are not piled in our living room! The larger toys went in the boys walk in closet (we're going to add more shelving in there, so eventually it will look much more organized in there and should work well). We brought Josiah's dollhouse and other Plan City wooden toys into the den next to the toy chest and shelving unit that have most of his smaller toys that he plays with on a regular basis. I also realized that the tall IKEA bookcase that had been in Josiah's room before fit really well in my laundry room, which is off the den (main play area). I was able to put it in there, and then use the bottom few shelves for kids toys such as the cardboard block set, duplo blocks, etc. I have the bottom shelf filled with the set of large cardboard blocks, and then the next two shelves have matching wicker baskets with smaller toys. The top shelves will hold my laundry detergent and some small appliances, which will free up some of the pantry shelving in the laundry room for actual FOOD!
4. My Mom brought over a darling patchwork quilt for Josiah's bed that has a mix of colors that go perfectly with the bedroom. It will be his temporary bedding until we buy the planes/trains duvet that I posted a picture of above.
5. We decided what furniture we need to be on the lookout for. We have agreed that Josiah will get a bed with drawers and possibly a little cabinet underneath, and that we will replace the small 3 drawer dresser with a large armoire that hopefully has dresser drawers, hanging space, and some open shelving for books. We also decided that getting some sort of a second storage shed for outdoors made a lot of sense, since the ride on toys and some of the bigger things could then be stored out there. We are going to take our time, and hopefully find the stuff we need on craigslist.
DH and I both feel like we accomplished enough that even if nothing else gets done before the baby arrives, things are organized enough now that we are prepared for a newborn! Still tons to do, but I feel SO relieved to have finished what we did this weekend.

I think it looks great so far. I think you'll be very happy once it's finished.
What is the white thing on top of the twin mattress? My son said his mattress is a bit too firm so I am looking for something to soften it up a bit. Where did you get that?

Jinnah, it is a memory foam topper with a cover... it is SO comfy! You can get them lots of places, I've even seen them on overstock.com. My Mom gave us the mattress and topper- it had been in my brother's room which is being turned into an office now that he is married and moved out!

That's really neat! I am going to see if I can find one. My poor son said his mattress is so firm it makes is back hurt! I will never buy a bunk bed mattress again!
