I wondered the same thing, but what the BTDT mamas above have said is what I've read too. Also read that some women 'feel' or even hear an audible 'pop' or pressure release. That seems to be less common though.
With baby number 5 my water was leaking, but started gushing in the shower and I definitely felt it. It was a completely different temperature than the water I was showering in. It was pretty obvious that it was my water, especially since there was an extra heavy flow of water down there.
Actually my nightmare is my water breaking in Wal-Mart and my husband's phone being in the car, but this is a close second. My mom told me that it's definitely something you'll notice though because it won't really stop.
