I must say I was pretty happy with our birthing/lamaze class this weekend.
It seems that our hospital is very open to couples doing what is best for them during their labor. We are basically left on our own until I'm ready to push! I mean that in a good way ... DH and I can do what works for us. They only leave me on the monitors for about 30 minutes when I first arrive to make sure all is good. If it is, we can do what we choose. They have a tub that we can use for labor (can't deliver in it). They have birthing/exercise balls that we can use. We are free to walk around the floor ... not confined to our room. The rooms are pretty "homey." There's plenty of storage, a pull-out futon for DH to sleep, rocking chair, TV, CD/speakers, and mini-fridge.
The instructor also talked about interventions/medications and it seems that they are really trying to suggest to women to use medication "intelligently." She let us know that pregnant women are athletes and not passive patients who need to be cared for. We are in charge of what is best for us. She gave us suggestions and breathing techniques that she said would work if we practiced and might mean that medication won't be necessary for us. I'd really like to try to do as much as I can with as little meds as possible. Not ruling it out since I've never been through it, but I'm trying to think positively and believe in my ability to handle my birth.
The class just made me feel good about delivery ... still nervous since it will be a new experience, but I think DH and I feel pretty confident in our abilities.
Thats wonderful that your hospital is so open to letting you labor as you like! I wish ours was like that here, but its not really. They keep you hooked to the monitor pretty much the whole time. Glad you had such a great class! And ditto on the breathing techniques....they helped me a ton when I was laboring with Ryan!
