I am only six weeks postpartum and just stopped bleeding LESS than a week ago.

Now I feel my period coming on. Why can't I catch a break? Seriously, only one week without bleeding? Shoot me!

I thought when you exclusively breast fed it stayed away for a while

I bled for four weeks after my daughter was born, after it stopped I got my period a week later. The same thing happened to my two sisters and they breastfed as well. Bummer.

Have you actually started bleeding yet? I'm EBF and sometimes get cramps or an achy type feeling like I'm going to get my period, but it hasn't come yet. I think it may have to do with hormones adjusting and BFing can cause crampy types feelings for some people.

Yeah, remember after birth and your uterus cramped when you BF'd? Probably a little of the same thing going on. I just started AF for the 2nd time since birth today (this one is just like I remember and i redownloaded my tracker app lol), and have had cramps for the past week lovely, huh?!?

^ Uh oh

I didn't even put my first on the tracker...I figured I'd let my hormones regulate some before I started to track them.

Exclusive breastfeeding doesn't guarantee it will stay away, it just increases the likelihood.

That said, any bleeding up to 56 days post partum is not considered the start of cycles if you are exclusively breastfeeding (no pumping, no supplementing). It's just that lochia can start and stop, especially if your activity level increases.

There can also be cramping that comes and goes post partum. It may or may not mean bleeding is on it's way.

Shawna, how are you so well educated on this? Where did you get your training? I'm always so impressed with you.

Reproductive education is what I do IRL. I'm an accredited instructor with the Billings Ovulation Method (and "retired"nurse), so I teach Natural Family Planning classes. Before I taught NFP, I worked on the Post Partum/Gyne Unit at our hospital. My training to become accredited took 2 years through the NFP Association of Alberta, but I'm eligible for Advanced training in 2013. Can't wait! I'm definitely doing it!

I agree.

Leanna, from what the others have said, it sounds like it could be a false alarm. I don't want to jimx myself, but I had pretty light pp bleeding and have no signs of AF yet. *fingers x-ed* I'm hoping it will stay away for a while.
