I don't knit...I used to know how but haven't even tried for years. I do crochet, though! They have awesome kits at Walmart/Hobby Lobby/Michaels with an instruction book, needles, and a few basics to get you started. I would try one of those and start with a small project like a potholder or something; then you can work your way up to a larger project like an afghan or clothing.
I ended up ordering both a learn to knit and learn to crochet kit from Amazon. Neither were that expensive so I figure I'd learn both and see which I like. I am not really sure of the difference, though.
I knit and crochet. I definitely second knittinghelp.com. They have tons of videos on YouTube that have helped me with particular stitches. I've made all sorts of things, including William's coming home outfit <3
