How do you feel about the fact that antibiotics are overused in the US?
Have you ever declined antibiotics for your kids and been alright?
Has your baby been on antibiotics yet?

Ruby has a little ear infection and I'm debating filling the rx or not. She's been sick for a few days, sleeping like crap, bad cold. I only wonder if we are on the tail end of it as the dr saw yellow fluid, not a red bulging ear. I'm on the fence. She had 3 days of antibiotics back when she had herpes before they knew what it was. I tend to be more cautious with antibiotics, especially in ear infections where most are viral and go away on their own.

How do you feel about the fact that antibiotics are overused in the US? We don't overuse them, personally.
Have you ever declined antibiotics for your kids and been alright? No. Mine are rarely prescribed them, and when they are, it's because we need them.
Has your baby been on antibiotics yet? Once. This was the only time we've been given them and might not have needed it. Elijah sliced his finger on our bathroom scale, and it went right through his finger nail (baby nails are so thin). They were concerned it would get infected, so I said okay to that.

I dont know the numbers or the resons so I cant really comment on all of Americas useage patterns. i personally have never heard of antibiotics being prescribed for anything but what antibiotics actually treat but who knows whats happening out there

Iv never declined them for myself or my child

my sons had drops once for an ear infection
Iv been on antibiotics 4 times I belive (leg infection from stabing my foot on a nail in a pond, twice when my BV acted up 2 much to handle, and once for a UTI when I was pregnant with Connor)

I dont find any of those resons to be an overuse personally

We avoid using antibiotics unless necessary. I do a lot of fighting of illness by way of boosting their immune systems to start with. My children rarely get sick, and when they do it is usually not something that requires antibiotics. Rebecca has been on antibiotics three times in almost five years, Elias has been on them the same number in three and a half years. The times he's been on them he got it from Rebecca, but didn't manage to fight it off as effectively as she did. His immune system has never been as good as hers. Esther has run a couple of 24 hour fevers, but hasn't been sick really to speak of at all yet. So far she appears to be the healthiest of the three!

Anyway... all that to say, I think people run for antibiotics before they need to, and I think doctors often prescribe just to make parents/patients feel better by way of giving them "something" to "help". It often ends up creating super bugs which are far more dangerous, so I usually weigh the pros and cons before even taking my kids in for a sick visit, let alone filling the Rx if there is one.

I am not quick to take kids to the hospital and I also try to do my best to boost their immune system and do preventive stuff. So, the few times we've been prescribed antibiotic it's been because we needed it. Right now, dd1 is on it because of an ear infection; she woke up crying at night in pain because of the infection. I am not sure if it's still over-prescribed but I think it was in the past.

I'm so glad we didn't give her the antibiotic as she seems almost back to normal today!
