When will you start? I'm trying to decide when to wean Mikey from the bottle. He has about 7 oz every 4-5 hours. Part of my concern is, he doesn't eat much baby food. It's a struggle to get him to even eat twice a day. Doesn't he have to be eating really well before I wean? How much baby food is your baby eating?
Missing my little sleeping angel ~ October 17th, 2011 ~ we love you Mychael!
Maybe he doesn't eat as much baby food because he is filling up on formula? I think the recommendation for 1-year olds is 16-24 ounces of milk per day. Maybe try cutting back on the formula a bit and see how Mikey responds with the solids...I bet he'll eat more My kids seems disinterested in solids until I cut out one of their bottles, and then suddenly they loved eating food
The twins eat 3 meals a day of solids (I make their food so I don't know how much they eat, but it seems like a LOT) and get 22 ounces of milk per day.
The babies still get an 8 oz bottle in the morning when they wake up, a 6oz bottle after lunch, and an 8 oz bottle before bed. I plan to start giving them their afternoon bottle in a sippy very soon, then we'll do that with the morning bottle, and then we'll cut the nighttime bottle last. I'm not in a huge rush to ditch the bottle...it is more important to me that they get their milk so they sleep well
Elijah hasn't been eating his solids so well, lately. He seems to be picking up again, though. I will not be weaning as planned at 12 months because I don't know if he can have milk yet. I'm just going to try making other food to see if he will eat that along with the purees.
Jamison was NOT interested in solids until a couple of weeks ago. Our pedi recommended putting 2-3 different things on his tray that were small finger foods/food related things like spoons anad cups, every time we eat. He is just now starting to eat more than just cheerios! He still only eats about 1/2 a jar of baby food and some crackers and cheerios each day, sometimes some small tastes of other things. I will let him self-wean from breastfeeding. He started refusing a bottle this past month, so if I have to be gone for a few hours, he survives on solids. He still hasn't gotten the hang of the sippy cup.
I think each baby is different and I sort of follow their lead. Luyando, like Jamison, is losing interest in her bottle. She takes my morning pump of like 4-6 oz and maybe another bottle of thawed breastmilk during the day, nurses before one or two naps and before bed at night and a bit more during the night. So bottle is slowly going. I want to start trying full milk in a sippy but haven't started yet. She does great on African food. So she eats that 2ce day and has apple sauce mixed with cereal in the morning. So at least 3 big solid meals per day. DD1 on the other hand had bottles until maybe 18-24 months (she was also on normal table food by age 1). She had a night bottle of whole milk once we transitioned from breastmilk. Has great teeth, no bottle-related decays or anything. We went from bottle to sippy cup and she still gets her sippy cup of milk before nap and bed now at nearly 4years old. Just follow his lead. It all works out at the end.
We are stopping the formula a week before his first birthday. He's been on a sippy cup now for about 2 months for water and he loves it so I'm assuming he will do well when we take him off the bottle completely.
