I always thought the 2nd trimester started at 12 weeks but my friend is determined it starts at 14 weeks. I googled to see who was right, and it was contradictory. Some sites said 12 others said 14.. So when does the 2nd trimester actually start?

I've seen 13 as well, lol!! I have an OB appointment next week and I plan on asking then.

It starts the 1st day of your 13th week. So for me, I hit 12 weeks next Friday. That means I have completed 12 weeks and day one of week 13 starts on Saturday. So I'll consider myself starting my second trimester on Saturday when week 13 officially begins.
p.s. I asked this same question about a week ago because it confused me too. And you'll still get different answers depending on who you ask.

2/12/13 - FET - Cancelled due to fluid in the uterus
2/20/13 - Hysteroscopy scheduled - 1 polyp removed.
4/10/13 - FET - 2 embies transferred as planned! 1 boy 1 girl!
4/22/13 - Trying to wait to test - Beta scheduled!!

I agree with Leanne. My doctor says the risk of loss goes down significantly at 12 weeks, so I think for developmental milestones and the "safe period" I'd consider it 12 weeks.

Yep, we learned 13-28 weeks is second tri! So I will say starting week 13 will be second tri, but honestly I'm just looking forward to being double digits for now

I believe it starts when the 12th week ends so the first day of the 13th week.

I consider myself safer when I hit 12 weeks, but I count the second trimester as starting at 13 weeks.

I think the confusion comes in that everyone says they hit 12 weeks and really they have just COMPLETED 12 weeks. So when you are 12 weeks and 1 day, you are really starting the 13th week and the 1st day of your 13th week is your second trimester. By the time you hit 13 weeks, you are actually starting your 14th week etc....

This is where the weekly baby progress things confuse me! Some of them take that into account but some of them don't.

According to how my doctor explained it yes, because you are starting your 13th week.
