So I just found out that it's not only drop-side cribs that are recalled and not allowed to be sold, but ANY crib manufactured before June 2011 isn't allowed to be sold, donated, borrowed or given away since they don't meet the new more rigorous standards.
This sucks! I was going to sell the girls cribs when we got their twin beds, but now it looks like I can't :/ I had no clue, I thought it was just drop sides!

it sounds like only markets/stores/2nd hand stores, ect can not sell them.. but to sell them personally theres no law against that... here in CA it's illegal to sell used carseats, but that only abides to stores, not personal sales

yep you can't even give them away!
A friend of mine was contacted through her post on CraigsList and was told to destroy her crib or she would be fined.
Makes me feel better that I didn't spend $$$$ on the Pottery Barn Kids crib I initially wanted.
I had to dump 2 cribs when we left the US in October... I felt awful knowing someone in need could have used them neither of mine were dropside either.

it says that the cribs DO NOT state ON them whether or not they are the new cribs under the new guidlines.. so how is anyone going to know any different... it says the only way to tell is with a certificate, in which many stores will not even supply.
i want to post on craigslist a crib just to see if anyone says anything lol... you can't expect someone to destroy something... i live in a complex.. do they think im just gona whip out a chainsaw and shred it to pieces.. i dont think so lol..
im all for safety and crap.. but i think this is just getting ***** ridiculous.. comes to a point where im wondering if this is to make people spend more money.. this is just stupid really... just like carseats.. it's not the manufacturer's fault that someone can not properly install... the majority of the cases that occured with injury were the owner's fault, not the manufacturer's fault... the drop side i understand... but when they are talking about how parents have been improperly installing the cribs by putting the sides upside, ect.. thats not the manufacter's fault.. just like it wouldn't be the manufacturer's fault that someone didn't make sure their carseat was properly tightened.. it's ridiculous!
and it says it's illegal to sell SUB-standard cribs... which means the cribs that did not match the new required guidelines.. the fact that these cribs do not STATE anywhere on the cribs whether or not that they match the new guidelines, make's it extremely hard to fine someone without having proof if it is or is not... that's why there are these certificates.. for parents to have to say "hey it is a crib that matches the new guidelines" but because majority of companies will not supply these certificates makes this sound like a huge scare tactic

basically because it says it's illegal to sell sub-standard cribs... pretty much makes the original law (of the drop side beds being banned).. the same law.. just added that even non-drop side cribs as well fall into this banned category.. and then also new that they will have certificates available for these new requirement cribs to say that they are the new guideline cribs.. so you have to get your hands on that certificate if the store you buy from does not supply them.. unfortunately majority of the stores will not

There are tons of cribs listed on Craigslist in my area. None of them are listed as new?

Well i guess i have to tell my friend that i wont be taking the crib she found me. Im all for saftey. But then i think of all those cribs and how someone could use them. Live babies are a lot better then risking getting a used crib that was mad before June 2011

It's amazing any babies made it who were born before June 2011. I'm all for safety too, but this is just silly.

At first I was with you Amber, but reading the article, it's stating that these older cribs can wear down and weren't tested to last as long as people are using them, weren't tested to be taken apart, stored and put back together, all of which can weaken things. So now I'm not 100% sure on what I am going to do...

Well, that seems a bit like overkill to me! lol In my area people are still selling drop-side cribs for $100 plus on Craigslist!

Sometimes you have to look at the numbers of baby deaths and make a common sense decision like for some issues there is maybe one or two deaths from a product or aspect of many products so you wonder is it really a problem? Last I read SIDS deaths from the crib itself is very low each year like less than 10 most are due to positioning or bedding. I would still try to sell it if the product specifically hasnt been singled out. Car seats are another story because if they have been in an accident they are worthless and you never know if it has or not with a used one.

I was just given a crib that is most certainly NOT new but it meets to 2 3/8 rail guideline, all the hardware is metal and it is rock solid. The sides cannot be installed upside down, the mattress fits snugly and it contains no plastic or thin metal. I can't really see a reason to get rid of it since it is built better than any of the cribs I could afford to go out and buy.

I bought my daughter's crib in 2010, and I planned on using it with this child. I had never heard of this law until now. I will still use it for this child. The sides can't be installed upside down and it is sturdy.

I wouldn't use an "old" crib either, but Akadia's was bought in 2009 and I think it's just fine. I wouldn't use one that is like 10 years old, but if it's just a few years old, not a drop down and is sturdy, I wouldn't be worried about it.

I just had this conversation with my daycare provider. She was disassembling a crib and she said she had to destroy it. She is held to a higher standard and if she gives/sells a crib and through a chain of events can be held ultimately liable if something does happen.
It's crazy, imo. Children are the responsibility of their parents, not big brother.
