This got me and DH talking again last night about this. I really didn't want to circ if this was a boy, but DH was dead set on it. Now, he at least admits, he'd have to look into it more. Kind of glad we are having a girl so I don't have to worry about it!

I read this last night. I think it would be horrible to go though that at age 4, but that's not when the majority of circumcisions are performed.
Regardless of feeling on circumcision, the thought of Germans again taking away the rights of Jews bothers me.

I agree. I just think everyone should be able to make their own decisions. Austin will be circumcised (my husband and I practically didn't have to discuss it bc we immediately agreed). To each his own

I personally don't believe anyone should have the right to circumcise anyone without their consent. If a grown adult wants to do so and make that religious covenant, than so be it, but it should be left to them.

Female genital mutilation (for any reason) is against the law, so why is it ok to "mutilate" male genitals. I don't think Germany is taking anything away from the jews. As its not only jews that circumcise for religious beliefs. I am jewish.
At 4 days old, 4 years old or 40 years old.. circumcision is painful.
I respect everyones decision to circumcise or not but I don't necessarily agree with it.

This is EXACTLY what I thought when I heard about this. Considering their history, you would think that Germany would try to be more sensitive about a topic that relates to Jewish rights..
In any case, we circumsize. That obviously isn't a factor with this pregnancy, but my son is circumsized and I'm not ashamed of it. If you choose not to, that is fine with me and I would only hope that I would get the same respect in return. I don't believe it is mutilation and I don't equate it to "female circumcision" in any way.

I do not think the government should have anything to do with what choices we make for our children. Weather it be circumcision or the need to vaccinate your child. As a parent we are suppose to chose what we think is best for our babies. Not that it will always be right and we will always make mistakes. Do what YOU as a parent feel best with.
As far as us and circumcision, Daddy is done and had NO problems at all.. He feels very strongly about having little man done. I am on the fence about it but I think we will more then likely have him circumcised.

Thanks Carrie, ditto this. I've been seething about this and you said it way nicer than anything I could come up with.

To me this falls under to each their own.
My son is, and had this baby been a boy, he would have been too. If someone chooses not not, more power to them! We all have reasons for choosing one way or another on many things...

I hate this topic. It always ends in those who circumsize being some kind of horrible mutilators. I know its not meant to start a debate - but there are always heated opinions surrounding it.

My thoughts exactly...there they go infringing on the Jews again. My son is circumcised and he has a beautiful pee pee (do all moms think that-lol) so I am not onthe German side here. I did not do it for religious reasons which many might scoff at but I stand behind my right to make that decision for my son. I think he will thank me for it later.

I'm sorry, but I will never believe that it's ok to cut off a piece of a child's genitals because of superstitions about it's "cleanliness" or religion. And it is very comparable to FGM, which I'd be hard pressed to find any of you agreeing with it, but it's perfectly acceptable in some cultures and religions, yet it's banned here in the States. Someone tell me why it's ok to cut our boys but not our girls??

Here is the debate - telling me that I am evil for circumsizing my son.

I never ever once said you were evil, did I? It's offensive to me when people say that an intact penis is disgusting, unclean, nasty, gross and other things people say are their reasoning to circumcise their sons.

I don't think its disgusting. I think its your decision to make. No - you never said I was evil. But - this is my decision to make - and if this is a boy, I'm not going to change my mind because of a bunch of online women telling me how horrible it is.
And no - I do not have a reason to circumsize that will make anyone who is anti-circumcision happy. But - I am happy with my decision.

And that's fine. In the end, it is still legal in this country to circumcise boys. All I asked was how was it so awful to circumcise girls, which is cultural and religious to some, but not boys, which is also cultural and religious to some?

Is there some special answer your looking for? I don't think anyone will be able to answer that question... but I do know - that my doctor won't be asking me if I want to circumsize my girl... if they do - I will most likely punch him in the face and call security.
