I just got back from L & D. I went in for back pain and cramping that i posted about earlier. They did the fibronectin test and it was positive. She wanted to admit me but i had my kids with me so she reluctantly let me come home. She said that a positive test is usually an indication of delivery within 2 weeks... I am freaking out though because when i got the positive when i was pregnant with Peter, it wasn't even a week afterward that my water broke..... I asked her about the steroid shot and she said she couldn't give it to me until I hit 26 weeks.... So now i'm freaking out even more.....

I am just getting home so i haven't had a chance to see about any false positives but according to my dr, it is a pretty accurate test with rarely a false positive... Does anyone have any experience with this test or have a false positive?

Krista I'm praying that your baby stays put a lot longer! I'm not sure what fibronectin means, so I'm no help, but I hope everything is ok. Did they say what causes it?

The fibronectin test, the way i understand it, is when the cervix or uterus or whatever, when it prepares for labor, it releases a protein or hormone or something that when they do a swab inside your vagina they can test to see if that "chemical" is present..... If it is present, it means your cervix or whatever is getting ready to deliver and from what i am told with previous kids and this dr. usually within 2 weeks you will deliver...

I've never heard of a false positive either......

I think you should go back so they can at least watch over you. We are praying for you!!!

A positive ffn is scary but it is NOT an indicator that you WILL deliver. It means you are at risk for pre-term labour. I'm surprised they told you that a + usually means you will deliver within 2 weeks, because MANY times this is not the case. Did they check your cervix (length?) etc...

Hope baby stays put!

Oh, no!! It's been one problem after another for you. I hope they can keep the baby baking for longer. I'm glad you have reached viability, at least. I agree with Kim. I hope you go back to the hospital for monitoring and treatment.

IDK why either, i went through this with my son, so i was asking quite a bit of questions and she seemed confident that it was going to happen, but i also thought it was just an indication that it COULD happen... idk maybe with my history she was saying that and didn't understand my questioning... I even told her i was freaking out and she gave me a hug and told me it would all work out..... now i'm even more confused and when the kids go to bed will start researching false positives and what my chances are that i can atleast make it to get the steroid shot to give her a better chance....

Krista- I went back to where I had read about ffn... The board I joined because of the IC.

Many women there say that the ffn will be positive if you are having cervical change or if you have a cerclage (which might be why my OB never had me do that when I was freaking about the discharge)... The post said based on her research, a positive is 30% accurate, where a negative is like 98%. People went on to post that they had a positive ffn at like 24 weeks and went on to deliver at like 35.

That said, I agree that being monitored is the best route since If you are there & they notice changes, they can administer the steroids. Maybe you could try calling the other hospital & see what their policy is on administering the steroid shots. I know here, they will give them at 24 if labor is imminent.

I'll continue praying for your baby girl and you and family. I can't believe you have yet one more thing to have to worry about

The link to the post I'm referring to. The ladies are very knowledgeable about all things cervix related, so feel free to ask them questions. HUGS

So this is what the fibronectin test is??? My doctor said they were going to do this in a few weeks because I have a Single Umbilical Artery....I didn't realize that I might go into preterm labor...???

I hope things work out for you Krista, my t&p are with you and the family and the little baby <3

Thank you Tanya... I have an appt on wed. with another dr at the practice so i am going to ask him and see what he says about it. I think i was about 28 or 29 weeks when i had the shot with DS... I just assumed that 24 weeks is viablility so 24 weeks they should be able to give me the shot... idk if its just a MA thing but i'm definately going to keep trying for it because i think it helped tremendously with my son.... On monday i am also going to call my MFM dr and see what they say about it...

I kept thinking that something was up when i had a good appointment on wednesday.. It just didn't feel "right" to not have a new issue for that appointment, but i guess this makes up for it... Always something... I have read that sex will give you a false positive, but i've been on pelvic rest so DH won't even get near me and hasn't for months so i know that isn't the case for the positive.
