We are already overflowing with books....but I may grab a few new ones at some point. For young babies, I love books with big pictures. Especially pictures of animals. Izzy always loved "reading" from about 6 months on. I honestly think it has a lot to do with why she was already saying about 30 words at 13/14 months old. Before she could verbalize anything, she could point out most of the animals. From there, she started being about to "roar" or "quack" and so on. Repetition is so important for their cognitive development!
I really like the "gossie and gertie" series, there are a few books you can get. We have all the classics, like 'Goodnight Moon' and 'Love you Forever'...etc...
She also has a bunch of national geographic books about animals, specifically baby animals, and how they grow. She just loves them!

As a former school teacher, I have probably a couple hundred picture books to choose from! I need to go through them soon and pull out some of my favorites. I'm planning on putting some bookshelves (aka IKEA spice racks... thank you Pinterest!) in the nursery, like this:
I've been out of teaching for 2 years now, so I'm having trouble thinking of some of my faves off the top of my head!
I have several books for story time about 10 Dr Seuss and half of the hardy boys collection when he gets older. plus a few kiddy books in German and Spanish. Ok so I never got rid of my books from when I was a kid sue me lol. but I don't have anything for the younger stages like the board books or touch and feels Or nursery tale collections so Ill still be doing some book shopping.
I remember my favorites being
Spot the dog
the little engine that could
and mrs tiddlywink
Omgosh, I bought a collection of baby books when school was finished. I used all of my scholastic teacher points and got 60 books. I had a lot of points. I have potty training, corduroy collection, no David collection, nursery rhymes, Mommy and daddy books, how do dinosaurs...., I spy books, birthday books, Goodnight books oo I can go on and on.
I have a lot of children's books from when I was in the classroom. Since I taught second grade a lot of them are for older kids, but I still have quite a few Eric Carle, Dr. Seuss, and "If you give a..." books. I'm starting to buy some board books and some of the fabric books, too.
We have a ton of books, but we have started a special collection (mostly board books) for Colt. A few Eric Carl books. I love you more by Laura Duksta and Kisses for Daddy by Frances Watts. Are a few of my favorites. My all time favorite is I love you forever by Robert Munsch.
We have sooooo many books!! Each of the kids have bookshelves in their rooms with loads of books. We kind of just divide them up into each of their rooms. Our favorites are Dr. suess books, If you give a mouse a cookie series, and anything from Eric Carle. We have a huge variety of touch and feel books, board books, and picture books that list things in Spanish. When people want to buy the kids gifts, we always request books. Oh, and we have all the classics like Where the Wild Things Are, I love you forever, etc.
We are big bookies over here too My uncle owns a bookstore so when he gets new books shipped to him he always sends us a big box!
Eli's favorite right now is "Mother, Mother I want Another!"
I love board books for when they are little little! And interactive books are always great too!

We have hundreds of books because I used to work for Barnes & Noble, being a teacher and having kids who are book fiends.
I have most of them in storage and usually have about 50-75 on the shelf at any given time. Angelina has her favorite books in her room...probably about 50 or so. Lorelai has a little stash of about 20 on her dresser for bedtime.
I have all the early books packed away but we always read Goodnight Moon to our babies because that was DH's copy and the Going to Bed Book by Sandra Boynton is the other favorite for the early days when baby is old enough to start establishing a bedtime routine. I loved Mercer Mayer books when I was little and so did both my girls. Lorelai still really loves them. A lot of stuff you need to gauge based on the interests and personality of your kid. Her favorite books right now are the Pinkalicious books and Ladybug Girl.
My kids love most books. They sometimes have kind of advanced tastes for their ages though. They really respond to books with an emotional component...either sad or funny. I don't think I've ever met a kid who didn't like funny books.
Reading to kids is probably my favorite thing about teaching. I use dramatic voices and go into characters and am not afraid to act silly. Even the kids with ants in their pants will usually listen well to a good story read with dramatic flair!
Books for babies are all very cute, but I get a lot more excited about the books for when the kids get to age 4-5 and you can start reading longer stories with them. With Angelina we started reading classic books at bedtime at age 5-6. Barnes & Noble has a series of classics that is reworked a little bit to be understandable now. They are great: Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, Pollyanna, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm etc.
Some kids' books mean so much more after you become a mom...I can't read the Giving Tree to my kids without getting a tear in my eye!
And if your kid is starting Kindergarten, get them the Kissing Hand. So sweet!
For babies though; Sandra Boynton, Eric Carle, Margaret Wise Brown and my kids always liked books with pictures of real babies/kids/animals.
I'm not a teacher anymore. I'm going to be staying at home so I'm not having any book clubs or anything.
Robyn, as of now me too, but at my school, I have connections lol I'm still going to order books from scholastics so I can get the special buys and love those dollar books. If you want me to order any for you let me know. I love buying books and getting the new ones as well. I'm a book alcoholic lol
I love the Ethan Long books. When my SIL reads Don't tickle the Duck with duck noises, my grandson goes into hysterics! I am so glad my daughter is reading to her kids. I always told my kids, if you are bored reading, you aren't doing it correctly.
