We may be getting a crib from a family member and it's white. I really wanted an espresso or black crib and we were planning to buy one at tax time. But a free crib that isn't dropside and isn't recalled would be nice.

Has anyone ever painted a crib? Or know what type of paint we can use? I know that it's been done but I want it to be safe if we take it.

I have painted a crib- not just b/c of the color- but b/c it was used, free, not drop side, and had teeth marks and other areas that needed filling and sanding. They're a PITA to get into all the grooves- even with a sprayer. If you don't have one of those, have fun!

White's a classic color. I know it's not what you're set on, but I'd leave it white, or if I were going to paint it, I'd paint it a bright fun color. Zinsser bullseye original primer is the best. It adheres well without needing stripping or sanding. You can follow it with any kind of paint on top, and I would seal it afterwards to make the finish more durable.

We do have access to a sprayer. I didn't think of that. With that primer I wouldn't have to sand anything? Just spray the primer on and then spray the paint and sealant on?

Baby is rooming with us and we have dark furniture, so I want it to match. Plus I tend to associate white with girls. *shrug* It's just the way my mind works.

No, you really don't have to sand to prep it. It's a pretty awesome primer. You may have to go over it really lightly after you spray it on if it leaves a gritty texture out of the sprayer. Just depends on the after effect. I know if I spray Kilz it gets a rough texture that needs a light sanding before I paint. Just beware that it is enamel or oil based (it's not water based- I know that much! There is a water based option, but it doesn't work as well.) so cleaning the sprayer will be a bit more labor intensive, and your hubby or someone else should do it b/c of the chemical's you'll need to do it with!
