I BELIEVE school has started back over in the US, so was wondering how all our school aged kiddos are doing???
- and my question - WHEN does a child start school over there, on their birthday, or at a certain time of the year????
over here in NZ, kids start school on their birthday... Gaby starts in around 6 weeks!
Around here, school generally starts after Labor Day, although I think our school district may have started in late August. And I know other places start earlier, too.
For kindergarten, it depends on your birthday. There's a cut-off point to enroll, in Sept. My daughter will start this September at age 5 because she was born before the cut-off. My niece was born AFTER the cut-off and will be about to turn 6 when she starts. So even though my niece is older, my daughter will start kindy before she does.
The school district we live in starts in early August, but that's pretty rare. A lot of schools in the areas where I used to live moved from Labor Day week to late August in the past few years (not sure why). The year-round schools sometimes start in August, but if they have rotating schedules, they might start in different three-month increments.
Our cut-off here is in October, but I'm not sure if it's the 1st or the 15th. Either way, Jenny will miss it- her birthday is the 21st! I think we can petition to start her early if we really, really, REALLY want to, but I don't think that's going to happen!
I know of a few schools in the south that start at the end of July! But mostly they start August-September. California is a state that has a late cut-off for school, I believe. You can turn 5 as late as December and start Kindergarten. My cousin grauated high school at a young 17 because she started Kindergarten so early. Compulsory attendance age is all states and the District of Columbia is age 8. Most people don't know that though, and assume their kids have to start school at age 5-6.
It seems odd that kids in NZ start based on their birthday. Does that mean a child who turns six in January gets 5 more months of school than a child who turns six in May? Weird. Or do you go to school year round? But then, wouldn't that be confusing for teacher who have children moving in and out of their class all year?
