I had all four of mine removed five years ago. One was cracked and causing me a tremendous amount of pain, so rather than wait for an oral surgeon, my dentist Novocain'd me and yanked them out. Novocain didn't work on the cracked tooth - HOLY MOLY, did that hurt. It was totally worth it though, no more pain!
I actually do have another tooth bothering me right now, so I'm feeling you on the sore mouth. Hopefully I'll be able to get in to see the dentist next week.
I had three. They put me to sleep for the removal procedure, and it honestly wasn't all that bad. I didn't even take the painkillers they prescribed (although my dad insisted on filling the scrip, just in case). I got by with regular Tylenol. I don't remember how long it took for me to be able to eat *real* solid food again, but I was able to swallow pasta noodles (Spaghetti-O's ) within 8 hours or so of the procedure.
