How do you feel about these dolls? Do you feel they promote a negative image in young girls? If you have girls, do you/will you let them play with these dolls?
There was a great thread about this on the debate boards a while back, so I wanted to get you ladies' opinions on this as well. I think in general, traditional parents tend to take a more laid back approach to topics like these. Kind of an attitude of "I played with Barbies and it didn't affect me" or "It's just a doll".
I let my dd play with Barbies, in fact she has all of my old ones. I have no problem with Barbie, and I like that they have made changes to her figure in recent years. (My old Barbie clothes and shoes are all way too small for the new Barbies that dd has, or they don't fit right at all because I think Barbie has smaller boobs and wider hips now) I also like the fact that there are Barbies representing all different proffessions, sports (not just cheerleading), and families.
However, the Bratz dolls are a different story. They look like little porn stars to me and I find it absolutely disgusting! My dd will not be getting any of those dolls or thier movies or other merchandise.
I'm OK with Barbie but we don't do Bratz in my house! Kaylee was once given a Bratz doll as a gift and she turned to the person who gave it to her and said "We really don't like Bratz" I was mortified...yet happy that I've instilled the thought in her head...hahaha...
I'm really not too concerned about Barbies, to be honest. Their image has changed so much of the years and the newer Barbies are more size concious. Which I feel is great, considering how old the doll actually is.
However, Bratz are another matter though. I think those dolls display too much importance on material items, fashion, and looks. My husband thinks they look like porn stars or hookers and I tend to agree with him.... However, we both agree that if they took a lower key to the makeup, and had some more "modest" clothing that we might take a different stance on that product.
We are lucky though, so far Belle has none of those dolls, Barbies or Bratz. Althought she does have two babydolls. A Disney Princess one of Belle from Beauty in the Beast; In a little yellow dress and bonnet. She also has one that her Grammie gave to her, curly blond hair, eyes that close when you lay her down, a white nightgown and purple robe with socks and matching purple fuzzy slippers. We've removed the socks, slippers and robe to let her play with it.
I think the BRatz dolls are too "provocative" looking....they also have a Bratz TV show or movie or somehting like that that I have seen the previews for....I would never let my daughter watch that! Barbie's are fine, I think...my daughter has one so far and she likes it....
