I reported to L&D around 7:20am on Sunday September 3rd as directed since I hadn't gone into labor on my own over the weekend. Even though I wasn't due until September 5th, my dr was a little concerned about letting me go past my due date and the chance that Lillie could be close to 10 pounds, and he was working at the hospital on Sunday anyways.
My mom, dad, and grandmother accompanied me to the hospital and my younger brother arrived shortly after I got settled into my room. The admit nurse did a horrible job trying to start my IV, she blew out 2 veins in my left arm and finally got it in on the back of my hand. My BP was a little high at the time but I was really anxious and had no idea what was about to happen.
They started the pitt drip at 8:05 am and then increased it at 8:30am. I was still just dilated 1cm when I was admitted. My dr came in at 9:05 am and broke my water and said I should have the baby early evening. I tried to hold off as long as I could but I have a very low pain tolerance and by 10:00am the contractions were a little uncomfortable and I was given Nubane in my IV. At 11am I asked the nurse if the Nubane would have worn off already because the contractions seemed to be hurting worse. She did a quick little check and I was 6-7 cm dilated. So the nurse called for my new best friend, Ted, the anesthesiologist, and my epidural was put in about 11:15. By 11:30 I was dilated to 9 1/2cm. Woohoo!! I'm thinking things are progressing pretty quickly and that the dr was wrong when he said I would have the baby early evening. Boy was I wrong!! I wasn't feeling a thing, just laying there watching the monitor and saying oh lookie there I am having a contraction!!
Around 11:50am the pitt drip was turned off and I was given the oxygen mask to wear because my BP was dropping and they wanted to make sure Lillie was getting enough oxygen. Whenever a new BP reading would flash on the monitor the nurse and my mom would ask if I was feeling ok and I was doing ok just feeling tired. My BP dropped as low as 71/26 and Ted was called back in and put some kind of med in my IV. The pitt drip was turned back on at 12:30pm and I felt my first pressure "down there" around 12:45pm. At this point I was fully dilated but Lillie hadn't dropped down, engaged, whatever they call it. So the nurse would come check about every 1/2 hour or so. At 4pm the nurse suggested that I start pushing to see if that helped move things along. It took me about 1/2 hour to get the hang of the right way to push since I really couldn't feel anything.
Lillie Grace was born at 5:45pm weighing 8pounds and 8.2ounces and measuring 21 inches long. My mom was there to cut the cord and to take Lillie's first picture.
