I'm not sure what to think of my doctors appointment.

It was basically just a meet and greet. They don't normally do this, but i was supposed to go in for a preconception appointment but i ended up getting my BFP. I had never met the OB or been to this doctors office, so they had me come in.

They don't do betas, they don't do an ultra sound till week 23 and i'll get to hear the heartbeat at 11 weeks. This seems like so much waiting to me!! I wanted to have something like an ultrasound to announce our pregnany. It seems like there is so much that could go wrong that they wouldn't even know about because they don't do an ultrasound.

I'm confused and sad now. Everybody has recommended this ob to me, and she was really super nice. I just don't like the whole wait and see approach.

So sorry it didn't go better. I know a lot of dr's don't like to even schedule an appt until around 7-8 weeks. thats when ours is scheduled for. Can you request a u/s? There wouldn't be anything to see right now but maybe in a few weeks?

I know it seems like a long wait, but sometimes the bloodwork can only serve to cause unnessacary worrying. My best advice is to sit back, relax, enjoy these early weeks, and before you know it, 11 weeks will be here! Believe me, by the end you'll be visiting your OB so much you'll be tired of it!

Will your insurance cover an NT test? If they will, ask to do one. They will bring you in between 11-12 weeks and do a test on the nuchal fold to look for downs syndrome. You would probably get some great profile pics of your baby that way!

Yes, ask them about a NT test. I will have one because of some genetic things that run on my husbands side of the family...

Did you ever have a miscarriage or is this your first pregnancy? You do not need Beta's unless you have miscarried in the back...I never had them done with my first son.

I wouldn't want an ultrasound right now! But i was thinking maybe they'd do one around 12 weeks, which is when we were planning on telling people.

I'll have to look into it. It might even be something they want to do when after i have my first nurse meeting to go over family history. DH does have downs on his side of the family, and i distantly have it on my side.

My doctor's office is like that too, except the ultrasound is around 20 weeks. I actually prefer it that way except sometimes I do get caught up in the frenzy on this board seeing everyone's numbers or u/s pictures.

If that doctor wasn't the right fit for you, you can try making an appointment somewhere else and see if you like that place better. You could even ask when you call if they do the early blood work and u/s if that is important to you.

This is my first. I guess i just incorrectly assumed that it was something they did for all pregnancies!

That's what i'm trying to decide. I think i'm probably being ridiculous. I just wanted concrete evidence that i am in fact pregnant before we tell people!

I'm high risk and can't even get in until 8 weeks because I'm po'. So if poor people have low progesterone, I guess that they think that it's self-weeding. Ugh.

Talk to your OB and see what she can do. Let her know that you'd like SOME sort of reassurance, and anything that they can think to do, you'd appreciate. My sister's doctor found *something* to look for so that she could have a little peace of mind.

My doctors office does U/S around 7-9wks and then several more after that. I personally wouldn't go to an office who doesn't give an U/S until 23wks and one where I wouldn't know if my babys heart was beating until 11wks.

Sorry this appointment didn't leave you feeling great! It stinks that there really isn't a set standard for every office to go by. I hope you can find some information or possibility of a scan to ease your mind.

DH and i discussed this further last night. When i go in for the check up with the nurse to discuss family histories i am going to push for the NT test or at least some kind of ultrasound instead of waiting to 23 weeks. Given downs on DH's side, plus some genetic issues of family members on my side we want to know and not wait till 23 weeks.

If they say no then we will explore other OBs.

Some docs only offer one ultrasound because that's all a lot of insurances cover. It may just be a courtesy to their patients to be sure they don't get charged out of their own pockets for multiple U/S (a lot of people don't know what their insurance covers).

Not saying you shouldn't ask for an earlier U/S, but before you do, be sure your insurance will cover multiple U/S or that you can afford th 20-ish week one yourselves.

My doctor's office generally only does the 20 week u/s unless you have issues. I basically claimed I never got AF after having my IUD removed in February. They are doing one on 5/21 as a dating scan.

I would not be getting it if I hadn't fibbed to them.

My office also doesn't see you until you are 8 weeks.
