Went in today to get my blood work results and to schedule a gender scan,
well I tested positive with active toxoplasmosis. Which I am told is very rare for this parasite to be active.. I am the first case in 7 years at my doctors office. So I now am going to an infectious disease doctor on monday to get antibiotics so hopefully I have not yet transfered this disease to my baby.
Instead of a regular ol' happy gender scan I now have to go to an childrens hospital to get special tests run to see if the baby has contracted it yet. If it has and if i do not miscarry then it will either be still born or mentally retarded...
good news is we will be told the gender at the hospital... yay.
I am so lost right now, I feel numb. I dont know what to think. Anyone by any chance know anyone that had ACTIVE toxoplasmosis while pregnant?
Oh my gosh! How scary. I haven't heard about that disease at all and i don't know anybody else who has had it. I am so sorry. This is sooo scary for you and your DH. Did they give you the odds of how often the baby will contract it from the parent while in utero?

Thanks Vicki for my always awesome siggy!
Thank you both, and no they didnt say what the chance of the baby contracting it is, I read on the internet that is a 30% chance, but I try not to believe everything I read on the computer lol. And toxoplasmosis is the infection you can get from cats. From cleaning their litterboxes or coming into contact with cat feces in any way. I dont understand how this happened. My husband has cleaned the litterbox since the day we found out I was pregnant I havn't touched it. Well ladies learn from this at least. be VERY careful with your cats while pregnant
I'm so sorry The good news is that the odds are well in favor of the baby NOT getting it from you, and it's great that the docs know about it and can take action to help just in case. I think in something like 85-90% of the active cases, the baby does NOT get it.

Ahh, it's 10-15% chance in the first trimester, 30% in the second. BUT, the antibiotic they can give you is supposed to then reduce the likelihood by another 60%.
I'm sorry you are having to go through this. It's possible you had it before you got pregnant and didn't know. I have never known anyone with active toxoplasmosis, but like the other girls said, I think that your baby's odds of being just fine are pretty darn good. And if you start the antibiotics, those odds only improve.
I will keep you and your little one in my thoughts and prayers. Please KUP on how you're doing.
I'm sorry to hear this news I've never heard of it. I'm a little nervous because my cat cuddles with me all the time but I haven't changed her litter. But like everyone said the odds are definitely on your side, I'm keeping you and little bean in my prayers.
Oh no, I'm so sorry you received news like this today. I will be praying that your baby has not contracted it and that the antibiotics take care of everything. Chances are, your baby will be fine, but I know I would be terrified. Hold onto hope and know that you and your baby are in many people's thoughts and prayers, mama.
Bless your heart. Know we are all here for you and praying like crazy. Please keep us updated on things. Praying you get your antibiotics and they work wonders. Hugs to you, sweetie.

Oh my goodness...I am so sorry! I've heard about it and read about it but never known anyone with it. Is that something they test everyone for automatically? I have cats and while early pregnant and didn't know it yet...I was literally having to wipe my cat's butt! She got attacked by dogs and had puncture wounds draining on her backside. She couldn't clean herself because she was so sore and swollen and she made a mess of herself. Anyway...I was also changing litter until i knew. Another way you can be exposed is gardening or planting flowers. If the cats go outside (or even strays) and poop where you might be digging, you could be exposed to it. I agree that you may have had it before you even got pregnant. Surely once you get on antibiotics everything will be ok?? I had a friend diagnosed with Lyme disease this year which is another one you always hear about but never know anyone with it. Anyway...everything she read and heard was gloom and doom and once she got on the right antibiotics with a Lyme specialist she was fine. None of the horrible things happened. I hope this will be the case with you as well. ((((hugs)))))
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb...I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made...My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together...Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
