Well I finally called the doctor and her assistant first told me that I DO need to fast, but then when I asked why since it's not recommended for the glucose challenge, she told me that it's because they like to do a fasting glucose first, so I asked if I can do those on two separate days, and of course I can't because they want to see the difference, blah blah blah.

So I tell her I don't think I will be able to drink the liquid on an empty stomach without throwing up (even when I'm not pregnant, I can't drink anything, not even water, without having food along with it, I have no idea why) and she says she tells patients to eat some protein for breakfast, just to avoid carbs etc. ??? So why tell me to fast!? She assured me that eating either an egg or a small piece of chicken, etc. will not adversely affect the test so that's what I'm going to do. I just don't know why they would insist on fasting then all of a sudden say it's ok to eat a breakfast of protein.

I feel better about it I guess but I've gotten myself into such a stress over it and I'm sure a huge part of that is just lame pregnancy hormones *sigh* I'll be so happy when this test is done.

So strange. I was never told I have to fast. I was just given a printed sheet with the foods I should avoid the day before and the day of the test. It was all pretty no brainer stuff...candy, donuts, cookies, cake, etc...

Other than this I was told to eat like normal.

That's how my first two pregnancies were, and that's one big reason this is stressing me out. I just don't like it when they change things up on me. I've also never had them test fasting glucose first, but w/e. I'm going to eat my tiny piece of chicken and hopefully that will be enough to keep me from puking!

Mine just told me to fast too. There was some blah blah reason behind it but I can't remember it now. It's really gonna suck. I'd better be able to do it as soon as I get out of bed or people better watch out. Me + empty stomach=

Are they going to do your fasting glucose first also? I wonder if some of them are just doing it differently now than they were a few years ago. It's annoying because the official recommendations for the test are to NOT fast.

I would try not to worry about it. It will just make your stomach more icky. My doc told me to eat protein and no carbs, sugar, ect. I would just try to drink that yucky drink as fast as you can and think that it is something wonderful you like..lol

For mine I have to eat at least 150 carbs a day for three days prior (don't think that will be an issue ) and then I cannot eat past midnight the night before. Luckily my test is at 9 so I think I should be ok.

I'm just really nervous for the results. I'm scared ******** about having gestational diabetes. I don't know why, but I am so paranoid!

I'm not sure. I will get my instructions at my appointment on the 4th. When is your test?

i think it is weird they told you to fast because usually they want you in your "normal state" to test your sugar....fasting would throw off the test in my opinion...but obviously im not a doctor. hmmmm......!!!

I have to fast from midnight to my test, 8am. It stinks b/c I am one hungry lady as soon as I wake up.

I have to call and schedule it at my convenience. I'm going to try for one morning next week.

Nikki, that's what I thought too.

Meredith, that's weird about having to eat a certain number of carbs. I've heard of that for the three hour, but not the one hour. Sometimes I think doctors just pick and choose so randomly! And try not to worry. I get it though, I've been super paranoid about this every.single.time I've been pregnant. I don't know why, it's just one of the things I choose to worry about. That and that GBS test at the end are two of my biggies.

My doc is making me do the 3 hour right away because the 1 hour isn't as reliable some women pass the one hour and end up having GD and others fail and are perfectly fine. I have to stop eating at 10pm and go in at 7 on the 28th. Soo not looking forward to it

My Dr just gave me my instructions for my test at my check up yesterday. She didn't say anything about what I could or couldn't eat the day before. Just that I was to go first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.
Maybe the reason they dont tell most women they can have protein is bc too many would "bend" the rules? To most of us we'd know to eat some plain chicken or a hard boiled egg or whatever... But someone else may take that as an okay to have a bucket of KFC fried chicken or a McDonalds egg mcmuffin... Kwim?
Either way try not to worry too much. The hour will fly by before you know it! I'm sure you have nothing to worry about.

I understand your worries. Mine is scheduled for 8am this Saturday, and I am freaking out a little too. I was told not to fast. She said having toast in the morning would be fine, but they didn't want me eating cupcakes or sugary cereal before going in.

Good luck to you.
