I had a water birth with my last baby and will have another with this baby (barring any unforeseen issues). I have home births, though. We use a large inflatable pool (with a sterile, sanitary liner) that my midwife provides. We just set it up in our bedroom.
I wanted to have a water birth with my first in the hospital, but they do not allow you to deliver in the tub in the hospitals around here. You can labor there, but they want you to get out to push. I think it varies from place to place, depending on the hospital's equipment, staff, policies, etc.
Birth centers are typically more water birth friendly, but again, it can vary from place to place.
I would love to have a water birth. If I did it would be at the hospital. One of our local hospitals allows you to labor and birth in the tubs. They have 5 tub rooms available. The other local hospital (the one I'll be at) has 1 tub in a seperate room that you are allowed to labor in but can't birth in it.
I've been meaning to ask my Dr. about it in hopes that the lady who told me this was wrong and I can actually birth in it.
