Is anyone planning a water proof mattress pad in case their water breaks while in bed? My doctor said the chances are low that this will happen, but I don't want to ruin my Tempu-pedic! I also don't want to spend money on, or sleep on, a mattress protector...

We already have a mattress protector so I am not too worried should it happen. I did have a friend whose water broke in bed during the night three weeks before her due date and it was ruined.

Actually this happened to me! I was sound asleep when "the dam burst" and boy was it a mess! Luckily, about a month before I was due my clever DH made the bed and lined my side with those lawn trash bags and covered those with towels. Then he put the fitted sheet on and I was none the wiser. He said he'd read a story about someones water breaking in bed and he figured it was a good idea. And it worked- not a spot on the mattress.

I always put water proof bed pads on my side for the last month or so. You can just find them next the adult diapers in the store. They are handy for after birth, too (in case you have spotting that goes through or misses your pad).

I thought I read this somewhere, but figured it must be a joke. Evidently not. Another thing on the list.

When I was pregnant with my son I just used one of the waterproof crib pads that I bought for his crib lol. I laid it on my side of the bed under the sheet and I figured I already had it so why not use it?

I didn't do anything with my first 2, but this is not a bad idea. I will probably just put the crib mattress protector under my sheet too since I have a few of them.

I have a mattress pad on my bed it is waterproof. We put it on in case the kids sneak into bed with us at night. We have had them pee and puke in our bed so we make sure we have something. I have never even thought about my water breaking..isn't that weird. May be it is because I have never gone into labor on my own or been close to my due date.

Well, since we are on the topic what about where you sit on the couch? Anyone worry about that?

Since this topic it brought it up I did think of the couch, and was thankful that we have removable/washable covers on all the cushions. It's also clearly nothing fancy, which we figured was good for spit up, blowouts, drool, split milk and other joys of child-rearing cleaning.

But this is yet another pro for the eventually-I'll-get-a leather couch: ultimately cleanable and durable.

It's not something I've ever thought or worried about, lol. Now that it's been mentioned though, I guess it'd be a good idea to have something on my side of the bed. My water was broken by the doctor with both of my previous kids so I guess it's not something I expect to happen.

I always have a waterproof cover on my mattress...but more for spills or kid accidents. I highly doubt my water will break before labor. I had AROM with the first three kids, and my last baby was born en caul. I just make heavy-duty amniotic sacs, I guess :-)
and in general, only about ten percent if women have their water break before labor begins, so odds are that you will have some warning.

We have one too. Knowing my luck it'll happen on the couch or in the car lol.
