I applied for WIC about 3 1/2 months ago b/c as a family of almost 6 and 1 income I knew we qualified and the amount of milk we have been going through is ridiculous so I knew if I got on it that would help our budget. I'm the only one who qualifies b/c my youngest is 5 now but that's ok. I get something like 3 Gallons of a milk, 1 half gallon & 1 quart a month on it. Sweet!

So while your preggo you go every 3 months until birth. This was my 2nd appt (last night). They check your weight to monitor your growth I guess. Well, I gained 20lbs in those 3 1/2 months on their scale. I'm not concerned one bit about it.

Anywho, the lady is all like "Has your midwife or doctor said anything to you about your weight?"

Me: "Nope, matter of fact they haven't mentioned it once. They aren't concerned"

Her: "How much did you gain with your previous pregnancies?"

Me: "43, 45 and 48"

Her: "Oh, so a little more each time, do you think this will be the highest?"

Me <starting to steam>: "WE'LL SEE!!!!! I'm NOT concerned or worried about it AT all."

Grrr.. mind your own P's & Q's lady!! The weights I gave her weren't even consecutive. I gained 48 w/my first, 43 w/my second and 45 w/my third.

I kind of wish I said something the lines of "Ohhh, I was hoping to break the record with this one!!" with a huge smile.

I'm sure she probably wasn't trying to pry but after I mentioned the doctors aren't concerned she should have dropped it. It felt like she was pressing the issue. It's a huge soft spot with my anyway. I'm not worried about it. For 6 weeks I maintained a 2lb range and then this past week BOOM packed on 5-6 pounds. I have been eating more this week but not enough to gain that much in fat. I know that after she is born 20lbs will fall off within the first couple of week w/out blinking an eyelash anyway.

Blah!!!!!

I don't care who you are, that's rude! Weight comments - pregnant or NOT - should be kept to oneself!!!

Oh man I know how you feel! I got WIC with DS and I went in to my first appointment and they asked how much I weighed before pregnancy and I said probably around x amount. That x amount ended up being 20lbs less than what I weighed that day (I was about 11wks pregnant then) so they kept staring at me like OMGosh has this lady really gained 20lbs in 11wks!?!? I knew I hadn't and the last time I weighed myself before pregnancy was about a year lol I always hate going cause they are all about nutrition and weight and make you feel like crap!

I totally would've said the "hoping to break record" thing bahahahah

Someone is always too fat or too thin at the WIC office. My dd2 is a tiny little thing- under six pounds at term, and consistently below the third percentile in weight. the WIC people once REFUSED TO GIVE HER FOOD until I brought a letter from a pediatrician stating that I wasn't STARVING HER. does anyone else see the disconnect there?

Wow, We dont have WIC here...and I think I may be glad bc these people sound crazy.

I have had SO many comments about how big I am. I have gained 16 pounds. I gained 1.5 pounds in 5 weeks. But everyone seems to think I am huge. I kinda want to punch people.

That's not right. If you are seeing an OB and they are fine with it why is it her place to question or judge you? That's really not fair. What I learning is that while I love my belly and my pregnancy, the body changes and the weight gain are very sore spots and yet even family members have asked what I have gained! Seriously people?

I say F em. You know what you need to do girl

Your weight is not her business. (Nor is it the cashier, the lady on the street, or the nosey relative.) Its like everyone thinks they have some insider advice or knowledge that you need to be enlightened about.
Your weight is between you and your OB. Period.
I need to start wracking my brain for good comebacks, because I know its only a matter of time before I start getting advice from know-it-all strangers!

I get the opposite my weight gain is lower than what it should be( is every pregnancy) & get comments about eating more & eventhough I FEEL huge always get told I need to be bigger/have more weight gain. Both of my girls were born healthy eventhough I gained JUST their weight.I am trying to keep the pattern of gaining that I did have with this pregnancy because was gaining well but it dropped off. Had a nurse@ my drs say need to eat blah blah blah.. I AM EATING, People are always going to make comments too little too much whatever. As long as you and your child/children are healthy I'd just ignore them you know how YOUR body reacts to pregnancy not some random person.

WIC is a great program but it seems like they get a little too involved when they don't have enough information. It's annoying for sure!

LOL go for it!! Maybe they'll stop making comments

Right?! If my OB was concerned, I'd be concerned. The last two appointments I had they said everything was perfect. Plus, I gained a lot w/the other 3 so I expected it. I wish I controlled it better but whatever.. it is what it is.

LOL I always think of the comebacks after the fact. For some reason when you're carrying a child it's like strangers think there's no personal space!

crappy... I'm glad for the help WIC offers, but I hated every time we went in there with DD. The nutritionist always commented about how my DD was "at risk for becoming obese later in life." so I REALLY needed to not give her much juice, buy low fat milk, etc.

1. She hardly EVER drank / drinks juice.
2. except for when she was just coming off formula we were on 2% milk, and eventually switched to 1% which is all we ever have now.
3. She is TINY. Can see her ribs now. She's just a little peanut, always has been... 43 pounds and 42 inches. I don't think she's at a more increased risk of obesity than any one else.

Grrr.

This time around they haven't said anything about weight but they're REALLY pushing BF. I can understand that, but if I'm voicing concerns about BFing don't just jump down my throat and say "DON'T RULE IT OUT, YOU CAN DO IT.... but IF YOU DO, decided to FF, then we'll just cut your benefits so you can have formula." Um, I said I would TRY but I'm not going to push myself to the point that it depresses me like it did last time. I'm ALL for BFing, but my body just doesn't do it well. I hate how they act like formula is horrible, and if that's what I choose I'm penalized. I get that the benefits are cut for the mother since she's not BFing, I'm fine with that... but don't phrase it like an ultimatum. Seriously.

I'm sorry. It sounds like WIC is universally employed by whackadoodles. I did notice the push on bf'ing. She talked a lot about that "we encourage mothers to put the baby to the breast right away, we suggest no bottles of pacifiers, we discourage introducing formula, here's a pamphlet on this, here's a pamphlet on that, here's a 24HR line you can call for a lactation consultant - leave a msg and they'll get back to you within 24 hours"... the last one kind of made me laugh a little, it's awesome that they have a help line but if I have a question I usually need an answer quicker than that.

Then she started going on about how some moms don't think their babies are getting enough so they feed them formula and it effects the bf'ing relationship. That's when I chimed in and told her that my daughter dropped over a pound when she was born and was severely jaundice (she had to wear a lighted wrap 24 hours a day) and that we had to supplement some w/finger feeding but that I was determined to bf'ed this time and we did end up bf'ing for 18 months. This is my 4th child lady I kind of have an idea of what I'm doing lol

My WIC lady for my son thought she knew everything, she always told me my son was over weight w/out knowing anything about my husband (6'6) my sons doctor always told me he was perfect and if she thought there was something to worry about she would let me know. I told the WIC lady that the one visit and told her if she felt concerned about my sons weight to please contact my doctor and discuss it with her.......I then switched offices.....

why do they think they are doctors?

(haven't read all the replies...yet!)

But from my experience the people at the WIC office (any office, I've been to three) are just plain rude. I don't know what it is but they can be so pushy about certain things. I know they are there to provide information and what not to those who need it most but they tend to overstep their boundries quite often.

Sorry she was so rude to you

After hearing all of these stories, I can totally see why my MIL chose to work there. She fits right in with the rude and pushy.

Ugh I remember the rudeness at WIC when I got it with my oldest.... I do think its a good program. Idk if they get callous from dealing with rude customers (I saw plenty of those too) and they don't know what to do when someone with some sense comes in, but it seems like even their good advice is given in a rude way.... Frustrating.
