Lets make a list of all the things we have heard that can help us prego's go into labor!! Obviously we do not want to go into labor until at least 38-40 weeks but it could be fun and funny to list some of of the things we have heard that helps!

I'll start.... SEX....I do not know how true it is but I heard seaman is a natural way to soften the cervix!

getting on all 4s and swinging your butt back and forth,
black cohosh,
spicy food,
bouncing on birthing ball,
walking,
and according to the old lady at walmart.. standing naked under the full moon... I dont know that my neighbors would like that though...

Certain massages can trigger labor. I'm only a week away from term so I'm getting ready to start this list!!

I have heard this too, and the spot is somewhere in between your ankle and heel. You have to be careful with pedicures when you are 3rd tri if the place doesn't know what they are doing....they could massage that spot too much and supposedly trigger ctx!

I am personally kind of wary about using foods to help induce, usually these foods (and castor oil) give you the poops.. not something I want to deal with while everyone is staring in that area!!! Espiecally if your are going to attempt a water birth or want to be in the tub they will make you get out if your poo is not completely solid.. Just a thought

I think that the "why" is really interesting --

For sex, it's the prostaglandins in the semen - They cause smooth muscle (including the uterus) contractions. (They are also present in your body at all times as well, semen is just more concentrated.)
Castor oil and or spicy food can cause upset stomachs. It causes severe peristalsis (contraction -> relaxation) in the digestive tract. (Usually just presents itself as diarrhea) This can trigger contractions in the uterus - especially if you have an irritable uterus.
Spicy food also contains capsaicin (what gives peppers their spiciness). Ingestion of capsaicin also releases endorphins which are hormones related to oxytocin. Oxytocin is known as the "love hormone". It plays a huge role in all aspects of reproduction and it makes you feel relaxed and great.
Walking, rocking on your hands/knees, hula-hoop, bouncing on a ball, stairs, etc., causes hip movement (as does sex) and helps get the baby in position. Then with her head bumping/rubbing on your pelvis/cervix it can get things moving.
Nipple stimulation can produce an orgasm (as can sex -- beginning to see a pattern) which is another type of contraction so again can stimulate labor contractions. Also, nipple stimulation releases oxytocin. Interestingly enough, pictocin is just a synthetic version of oxytocin that is used to induce labor and strengthen contractions. It is what is given via IV to induce labor.
Acupuncture/acupressure - thought to release oxytocin and prostaglandins. (It hurts so good)

So basically there are seeds of truth to all these "myths". None of them are reliable enough to increase your Bishop Score (score used to assess labor readiness) so none of these methods are relied on by doctors. Hormones play a huge role in the ripening of your cervix thus your readiness for labor. That is generally why women so often go into labor at night -- their body gets a nice dose of drowsy endorphins and oxytocin so there you go - labor! The catch 22 of it all is that much of the time women trying to induce labor are anxious and inhibit the release of these great hormones, so they end up jinxing their body! So one of the best things to do is to just relax and be happy, baby will be here soon!

Also - No clue as to pineapple, eggplant or cream cheese.
