How long should I use a slow flow nipple? What are the indications that he's ready for a faster flow? Are reflux or gas reasons to keep him on slow flow longer?

Good question... I don't mind asking my Dr tomorrow if you don't hear anything from another mommy tonight.

Great question, I have no idea but would love to know! Amanda - if nobody else chimes in, let us know what your doc says tomorrow!

I'm bf And was told to only use premie nipples. I couldn't find any so I just use slow flow, but as long as I'm breastfeeding I will only use slow flow. Otherwise he may realize how much easier bottle feeding is and go on strike!

Robyn,

Dr. Brown's makes preemie nipples! I only know this because we had to switch Sophia from slow flow to preemie there for a while!

I am not too sure, all I know is that with my other 2 kids I really didn't move them up that much. I think maybe they just went from slow flow to the next level and that was it. I would say that if your LO is comfortable where they are then to leave it until they look like they are getting frustrated to get more out.....I would also ask your doctor though.

Babies on average tend to get frustrated around 3 months. Depending on what kind of bottle you're using you may be able to try a medium flow nipple. Hope this helps

Oh how I wish I had known about preemie nipples a couple weeks ago! Scooter used to choke on the slow flow with one of his bottles. He's good now, but wow, that would have made a big difference!

We never moved my son off of the slow flow nipples. When we tried once, he just kept dribbling it down his chin. So I really think it just depends on the baby. If they are happy with teh slow flow and not taking an hour to eat, there's no real reason to move them IMO.
