Have any of you ever had an abnormal pap smear? I had one at the beginning of this last pregnancy and then again just after. What causes it? I forgot to ask that! I know my dr told me I was at an increased risk of developing cervical cancer

Yep...had it last time. They do a coloscopy (probably spelled wrong) afterwards which hurts like ... really bad cramping.... After 4 months though the abnormal cells had healed themselves and I was back to normal. Had another abnormal at the begining of this pregnancy, and another stupid coloscopy and biopsy a few weeks ago and am waiting for the results on the 9th. Can be caused by a number of things, but to not misinform you, I'll just let you ask your doc. Most abnormal paps come back ok after the coloscopy and after a few months. They will suggest that you be very vigaliant with having at least one pap every year afterwards though, if not more.

I have had a few. They were all squamus cells of undetermined nature due to HPV.I was terrified my had cervical cancer and had just died.THe first was during my pregnancy with AShlie and I did the coloposcopy but no biopsy becuase I was preggo. My pap after she was born was normal. After I had Aidan my pap came back abnormal again. I had the colopscopy and a biopsy. i was so scared that the biopsy was going to hurt but it honestly didn't hurt at all. I had bad cramps after but I just took some ib 800's . Abnormal paps are usually caused by HPV and eating right and taking vitamins, vit B, Vit e, Folic acid and there is one other but I am not at home right now and can;t think of the name of it. it is Beta something or other help control HPV. If you type in HPV on a google search you will get a ton of info. Your dr should have automatically tested you for HPV when you got your abnormal pap.

It is an STD but almost 70 % of the population has it and condoms don't always stop transmission. If you look into HPV you will find out it is the fastest growing STD in America and most of the people who have don't know it. Most strains show no signs in men. Woman only get diagnosed after they have the abnormal pap which is a cause of HPV not a smptom. You could carry the virus for your entire life and never know it.

I've actually heard that the % is more like 80% now...and that is reported cases because most people show no symptoms and can carry it without any real symptoms. I have NEVER had any symptoms other than that abnormal pap. There are different ways it manifests itself as well.

HPV can be contracted just by using a public restroom, since it transferred skin to skin and not by bodily fluids. there are over 100 different strands of HPV and only 30 of them are STD's. common and plantar warts can be caused by HPV. heh...my hubby has wart issues, usually on his feet, so i've read alot about it. he thinks that he contracted is from SROTC camp in college. they had communal showers in the barracks, so its very likely.

i had abnormal cells after having jacob and had a retest about a month later. my doctor seemed to think it was a fluke because my second test was fine. i wouldn't worry just yet. hopefully, it's just a weird thing for you, too.
