He started coughing last Sat. and it has turned into a deep chesty cough. The Dr. told me to raise his mattress on one end, get some saline nasal drops and a cool mist humidifier. We went to WM last night and spent $50.00 on a humidifier, nasal drops, infant tylenol (we haven't needed to give him yet b/c it's just for pain relief and fever reduction) and some Vicks BabyRub (for infant 3 months or older) which I've been putting on him ever few hours.
His cough is so horrible, but he's being so good about it, he doesn't complain. He still smiles and everything! But everytime I hear him cough it breaks MY heart. It's hurting me more than him! I wish I could make it stop. He had been coughing all night and last night he didn't cough much - we put a crib wedge under his mattress (someone gave us one that is made for that purpose) and put the humidifier right next to his crib and he seemed to sleep better. As soon as he wakes up though, it's cough cough cough.
So everyone send some Get Well Soon vibes to him.
The Dr. said it should pass within a week or two and that if he gets a fever or becomes uninterested in eating that we should bring him in. But until then there's nothing else they acn really do.
I'm so paranoid about sick babies and breathing that when they're ill I sleep with them in the recliner to keep their heads up and so that I'll know if they have any breathing problems at night.
when i get sick, congested babies i sit in a steamy bathroom. now, there are these neat shower steam things made by sudacare. it has menthol and eucalyptus oils in it and when the hot water from thew shower hits it, it releases a soothing aromatherapeutic steam. i used one for me and it helped. it doesnt have medicine in it, so it would be homeopathic (in theory).
I added the quote to my post, guess we posted at the same time. lol...I have sat with him in the steamy bathroom too. But nothing is helping much besides his crib wedge and humidifer. I guess it's just something that has to pass. Where do you get those shower things?
I know it is scary .. Krish had a cold some time back and he had problems breathing sometime .. I used to be so paranoid ... Hope Davey feels better soon !
Spencer has also had the exact same thing. His started christmas eve and he is just now really getting over it. One other thing our pediatrican recomended for him was to let him sleep in his infant car seat. It kept him at a good angle to help him breath. And he also let us give him some infant robitusin which really helped to break up the congestion and cough up the mucous. We just had to keep a suction bulb handy because it seemed like we had to suction his nose about every other hour. Hope Davey gets to feeling better soon.
OMG - Davey HATES HATES HATES his car seat! As soon as he goes in it he screams! We do have the crib wedge though. I am thinking of calling the Dr tomorrow and asking about infant tylenol cough & cold. I saw it at wal-mart the other day and was wonderng why he couldn't take it.
Well I ended up bringing him to the Dr. today because his congestion was getting worse. They checked his oxygen volume in his blood, it was good. He is definitely congested and the Dr. said it sounds like he is beginning to get bronchialitis (RSV) and they tested for it, he was +. We have to watch him for fever and uniterest in eating. I have to bring him in again tomorrow for a re-check.
They tried giving him a nebulizer treatment but it didn't help much.
It's so nerve-wracking because he said some babies can end up hospitalized, I just can't picture my little man in the hospital.
But the Dr. said he's already a week into so maybe this is as bad as it'll get.
Here he is sleeping earlier (he's been sleeping alot lately), I'm keeping him in his swing alot now though (when I'm not holding him)...
karin had RSV at 4 months and had breathing treatments with a nebulizer. we did them every three hours until she was better, then i had to do them once a day after that, because it was during the winter and she had troubles breathing. but, she had allergies and chronic ear infections at the time, as well. i hope he gets better soon. did he have the albuterol and saline solution or just the albuterol? at first, karin had both solutions, but it didn't help so she was albuterol only.
