Okay, we are such rebels. I know I'm technically in the wrong here but it's so stupid to me and I'm POed beyond belief. We got a letter in the mail today saying that we are in violation of our HOA agreement because we planted a tree in our front yard (a year and a half ago) and have a non-permanent rock boarder around the garden area in the front yard. We didn't ask permission beforehand and I guess they are threatening to remove our tree and boarder. I just think it's soooo stupid that you can't plant a freaking flower without asking them if it's okay first. We're not talking about destroying the yard, it's called an improvement. I guess we should have left the dead plants in the front yard that died during the last freeze and we would have been okay since they gave them to us when we build the house. Like I need this crap to worry about between my constipated son's poopy diapers and weight checks.
aww that sounds stupid!! I would be mad too.. I'm sorry. I say dig up the tree and throw it in the parking lot of the people I hope they let you keep the things you've planted.

I would hate having to ask everytime I wanted to do something to my yard. That is one thing DH and I enjoy each year is going out and picking out flowers and plants for our yard. DH also does a garden each year in our back yard...even when we rented our landlord let us do it. Sorry they are giving you such grief about something so small.
That is one of the reasons we made sure to buy where there was no homeowners association... I want to be able to do what I want when I want... Hope they let you keep it
That is really stupid. My sister and I lived in a condo tht she OWNED, same as you, and we has issues like that too. Sorry you're dealing with that right now. I know you're stressed enough just worrying about B.

If you want to live in a decent area in this city you can't avoid HOA, so we're stuck anywhere we go. The tree was a house warming gift from my parents...$300 so it's nice, not some crappy tree that's gonna die in a few years. Oh, well.
Well that's just beyond anal. I could see if you had a beat up Chevy with no tires on blocks in the front yard, but a tree??? Is it that they don't allow trees in the front yard at all? Or are they just pissed cause you didn't ask? That would annoy the fire out of me as well. I think Maddie's idea rocks. lol
Yep, it's because we didn't ask permission. I mean I have no idea if other people got letters or if they followed procedures but we have some wacky stuff going on around here. Some guy has a car in his driveway with a cover on it which seems like an eyesore to me especially since he has a two car garage. Some other lady took her house numbers down and replaced them with tie-dye numbers...they made another person remove a decorative wheelbarrow planter from their yard. The neighborhood is really small (it's actually two neighborhoods with the same name that are not connected in any way, it's a PITA trying to explain to people how to get here) and we live next to the HOA President...I'm gonna have Jason go and talk to him. It just seems so unnecessary that you can't even hand a planter or plant spring flowers with out laying out a plan for them. Thanks for listening to me girls.
Our neighborhood has a HOA that goes out & threatens people, but doesn't really have much authority. I think they've fined people & sent out warning letters, but that's about it. My husband has a trailer he uses for his business. This is just a tow-behind trailer that's 16-feet long. Doesn't fit in our driveway, so we park it in the street. We don't STORE it there. But if we have to take it somewhere early in the morning, we go pick it up and get it ready the night before. So it's literally there less than 12 hours. EVERY time we have the trailer, about a week later we get a letter telling us that we must remove the trailer from neighborhood property. We've even had the police called on us twice. It's a plain, white trailer that is well-maintained and doesn't block any driveways or mailboxes. But someone in the neigborhood obviously has a bug up their butt about it. The HOA says no trailers or non-operational vehicles on your property for more than 48 hours. Nothing about in the road. The city ordinance says no trailers or vehicles parked on the street for more than 48 hours. Neither of which we are even coming close to violating. Whatever.

We too have a HOA that blows! It sucks that you have to have them to maintain a nice neghborhood. I would think any improvements nonstructural should be okay without asking, and if not I'd be in violation all the time! I landscape my yard with trees and plants without asking! Hopefully it something the assoc has to send a letter about, but nothing you'll have to change especially over a year! That's insane!

I'm so glad I live in the middle of no where! I believe I would be fighting for some reformation of the HOA! One of the great things about going to some neighborhoods is seeing all the individuality in landscaping (improvement landscaping that is!). It's funny. In america we can choose what religion we want to be, how we want to dress, what color car we want - but we all have to look the same when it comes to our houses. Seems a bit crazy to me!
HOA sounds like a good topic for the debate board!
