My kids got one a little over a year ago for christmas and they love it. We have TONS of trees in our yard though so we always have leaves/limbs on there that they have to clean off before they jump each time. I don't know of different "types" of trampolines we just have a basic round 14' with the enclosure. I've had to make a strict no jumping into the net rule though because I've heard that the nets will tear up fairly easily...but ours is still in like new condition after over a year...so far so good My biggest issue was finding a step stool to help them get on/off the trampoline by themselves (because they would literally jump for 3 minutes, then go slide, then jump for 2 minutes then go swing for a bit then jump for 10 more minutes LOL it's an on/off continuous cycle) . I think Sam is plenty old enough for the trampoline. I have 1 and 2 year olds that I have babysat that enjoyed it (by themselves without other kids bouncing them) and I'm sure Sam will too.
I wish we could have a big one, I even think they are fun! We got Jake a 'my first trampoline' for his birthday last year and the kids both love it, they use it together but the weight limit is like 80 or 100 lbs or something so pretty soon they won't be able to.
we've had one...and they've been using it since they were 2 or so. We got a really nice one from Sams Club that is square with an enclosure. I really like the square shape because it allows for them to sit in the corners of it...if one of them wants to get crazy with their flips..without landing on each other.
