I started today. They wanted me to start on Monday but then asked if I could come in today to do payroll...which took all day. Then asked if I "wanted" to come in tomorrow. well...I kind of had to say yes! Even though I didnt want to.
Its 8:30-2:30 M-F. Its a family-owned roofing company thats been in business for 100 years. There's about 50 employees, though most of them are the roofers themselves and I wont see a lot of them. There's 3 older guys-the owners. One of their sons, and the other lady who works in the front with me.
The computers are OLD and SLOW. I cant believe how old and slow they are. The keyboards dont even have number pads on them which makes for a MAJOR pain in the *** in entering all the payroll numbers! It seems very half-assed to me. They have no written procedures or tasks or anything. Like..."here's your desk, have a nice day".
ps...I plan on writing procedures as I learn them. I work much better off of a checklist. The girl showing me payroll today had to stop 10x becaues "oh I forgot this" and "oh i forgot to show you that".
It'll just take a little time until you get comfortable then you'll be doing things your own way. I'm sure they'll be very impressed when they see how much more efficient you can be with a little organization. You're going to end up running that office in no time! lol
I was a wee bit disturbed to find out today, while updating employee files, that almost all of them have been in trouble with the law. And then 3 guys showed up to apply for job...a place called "second chances" sent them over because the company is known to give...well, second chances to ex-cons. That makes it a little unnerving when I'm all alone in the office!
