Holy crap Megan! I just today posted this very question on the teacher's board! Go there to see responses. I haven't checked yet. I am looking to pick up some tutoring and was thinking $25-$30 but didn't want to ask too much! YIKES, $50, that is too high, IMO!

LOL! I thought of the Teacher's Board after I posted this and when I went there I saw your post! I was like OMG! Weird! I think $50 is high too, but I don't know anyone that charges under $40 (that is a degreed teacher) unless the tutor is like a college student....We have A LOT of competitive students AND parents here!! I've had students cry when they get a low grade---and had one student even said "Now, I'll never get into Harvard!" How SAD is that??? And that is coming from a FOURTH grader!!! This student that "needs" tutoring was an A to A+ student in my class last year and even had a chess tutor! So you can see that he doesn't really "need" tutoring...his parents want him at the "top of the game." I really want to say...well how much time does he get to P-L-A-Y outside????
They live less than 5 min from me so I may do it....I'm trying to think it through....
Oh and I had a math tutor was I was in 5th grade (I was SOOOOO bad at math) and I remember my mom paying $25 an hour....and that was 20 some years ago!!
WHen I was in college I charged $15 an hour (b/c I didn't have my degree) and I remember thinking that $15 was not worth it...w/ all the time I put in for the prep beforehand and the time during the tutoring....ok I'm talking way too much....I love talking "school" talk....

LOL! I love talking school too! I miss it-teaching, not the crappy paperwork though.

Wow about your fourth grader saying that. That is so crazy! I totally sounds like this family just wants to make sure this kid is the best. I mean, a chess tutor?

Ya know, I had a math tutor in high school. I should ask my mom how much she paid her.

Let me know if you decide to tutor. Would it be once a week or more? I am looking to do it 3-4 times a week, maybe one or 2 kids. What will you do with Ava? I will have to do it with Sydney here though. But, she is not a disturbance. I am hoping that wouldn't be an issue. If it is, then I will find someone else.

The mom wants once a week....which I can do.....I don't think I could do it at my house b/c Ava would be all over me! Even if Dh took her to the basement or another room if I heard her cry I would be distracted...so I'm thinking his house or the library. DH said he would watch her and who knows it may only be a month or two of tutoring I don't know...but I'm thinking Christmas Money!!

I'm w/ ya on missing teaching...I miss the kids, the kids, the kids, and the fun stuff, but not conferencing, PARENTS, and all the fluffy paperwork! Ugh!

Oh and one of my teacher friends that is now tutoring b/c she is staying home w/ her little boy Jack....she's charging $50 and hour and it's just to keep the boy organized and make sure he's done his homework!!!!! OMG!

$50 an hour isn't too high here. It depends on what you tutor and how qualified you are. I, personally, would charge $35 an hour to tutor high school English students. But that's because I don't feel as qualified as some teachers with a Master's in English, so I don't think I could do $50 an hour.

The big draw here is high school math and science. If you can do those, you can even go above $50 an hour!

Think of it this way, though. At Sylvan Learning Centers, they charge $40-45 an hour for a kid to be one of three kids "tutored" by one person. I figure that $40 has got to be fair, then, if it's one on one!!

I'd love to hear how it goes for you... when I finally get to quit teaching, I plan to tutor as supplemental income.

And by the way, to those of you who miss teaching, anyone wanna sub for me for a few days? WHEW, I am worn out and desperately need a break!

Well, I guess $30 an hour isn't too unreasonable then.

Btw, no thanks for the subbing offer, that would be worse!

I pay 65.00 an hour for a tutor to come by and help Isabella with her testing skills. I have no idea how to help with that and she is doing a lot better! It is worth every penny. She comes by 2 hours a week. She will only need to do it for another 2 months and then she takes her test but I like this lady so much I think I may keep her coming to challenge Isabella.
