At Ava's 15 mo appt, her Ped said starting at 15 mo is a good time to start time-outs....I was actually a bit shocked...(only b/c I'm thinking Ava would seriously have no concept of a time-out). He said to use a pack-n-play or the bottom of a step.
Right now all I do is tell her "no" and remove her from the situation (and talk w/ her as well).

I'm interested to know how many of you are doing time-outs w/ your 15-16 mo toddler? Are they working? Does your toddler understand what is happening? Does the time-out make him/her remember not to do the "bad task" again?

I have a few times. Only when Jude does something mean to his cousin. Then I sit him down sternly away from us. He of course gets right up. But atleast he knows he was in trouble!

No not yet. I tried one day, it didn't phase her. But I might start doing it soon.

I do time-outs the way Rebecca mentioned once. I sit down (always in the same spot) with Thatcher in my lap. We sit for about one minute, and I quietly tell him no and explain why we're sitting there (even though I don't know how much he understands). He wouldn't understand the concept of sitting alone... he'd be off in a heartbeat! I think Rebecca said Charlotte knows to sit alone for time out now, though, and maybe Janine's daughter Hazel does too.

Thatcher has learned not to do certain things b/c of time out, but it takes many repetitions. With other things, though, it doesn't phase him. The more consistent I am, the better results I see, but it gets exhausting sometimes so I get lazy.

That's a good idea...I'll try that...we haven't been to the "time-out" stage...yet though!

We have given Kaeli time outs a few times. We put her in her crib. I wouldnt say that it really teaches her anything, but it gives her her chance to have her fit about whatever she is having a fit about.

Trey has had many time outs We use his high chair for timeouts since we don't use it for anything else since we got him a booster seat. We tell him what he did was naughty and remove him from the situation and if he does it again we sit him in his high chair for 5 minutes. We picked the high chair because he can't get out of it and we wanted to use something that wasn't used for anything else. We didn't want him to associate his playpen that he naps in with a time out, kwim?

It is effective because he doesn't like to sit still. But it's more effective when daddy does it more than when I do it.

i have removed him from the situation and plopped him in the big chair and told him "no_________". He sits for a minute, gives me the "bad mommy" look and gets out of the chair!!!

We have a penalty box in our living room made from four pieces of a Superyard XT. We don't use it often... But when Charlie pitches a fit or is bad (like hitting the dog) we put him there until he can settle. It's plenty big enough for him to lay on the floor, which is his favorite fit position. I think it was pretty effective because he started associating the penalty box with negativity, and he didn't want to go there. I don't remember the last time we had to put him there. He usually shuts up when I pick him up!

It seems like all our babies listen more to their daddies than to their mommies! Time to start a poll...
