There's a Speech Pathologist and a Child Development woman coming. The CD has to come for the initial Speech Eval. just to "make sure" everything else looks okay. I'm excited for it, they're coming at 9:30 and it's a 2 hour evaluation. Does anyone have any advice on what I should expect??
I took Abby to speech therapy at this age. They pretty much just played with her and tried to get her to say sounds, words. They would look at books, puzzles, toys (doll house, animals, etc). They just went with her flow! It was really helpful to me...pay attention to what and how they are doing things. Because the biggest help in speech (IMO) is being able to do it at home, all the time. It's really quite interesting. And ask them questions, why you do it that way? Is this normal? It will help you understand how to get him to improve.
I can't remember...I assume Gavin just is not saying many words. That was Abby too. Then we went into pronounciation.
Can't wait to hear how it goes!! Let us know!
If he doesn't cooperate for all of it, (because it's quite likely) just talk to them about things to do at home, etc.
Yes, Gavin just isn't saying many words...lots of sounds, not many words. We actually feel like in the last 2 weeks he's started saying some things (not that anyone else would understand though.) He'll point to his sippy and say something that somewhat resembles "drink". So pronounciation may be the path we take also. Thanks for your help.
Good luck! I imagine the session will be interesting. I am curious too as to what will be done. I have a friend whose son isn't saying much other than sounds too, and I wonder if she will do any of what you are doing.
It went well. Today was actually another evaluation...they said his receptive lang skills were at a 15 month level and his expressive was at a 14 month level. Overall, he's at a 14 month level.
But there was also a Child development specialist there who tested his motor/cognitive skills. For those, he tested at or above his age level.
They see a need for speech therapy, but nothing else at this point. His actual first speech session will be next thursday. Thanks for all your good words.

That sounds exactly like where Abby was at. I don't remember her exact months but I know she was ahead for cognitive. She understood very well, it was just the speech. A lot of it may even just be them going by what you tell them. How he does at home, and then they will work with him on things he has trouble saying, etc. I can't wait to hear how the actual speech goes.
sorry I got to this late. Sounds like Gavin had a good evaluation session. Its great that you're doing this for him. Im sure he'll do great and will improve in no time.
That's great he's doing so well in some areas, and that he is getting the help that he needs for the others. Hope to hear reports of his speech improving real soon Krystal!
I'm glad it went well today! Our teachers that come told me that any findings within about 6 months of their real age is doing fairly well (once they hit 18 months old)
