The baby will be sleeping in there for a while, I know there should be no pillows or blankets in there though, so do we just lay him on the bottom? There is a pad on the bottom which is cushiony.

Didn't yours come with a bassinet? Mine has a detachable one, that sort of sits on top of the play area.

I always used a blanket tucked in below armpit level and that was all. Actually I used a side sleeper too so that baby was in between that on her side and tucked in with the blanket.
similar to mine
I just felt more comfortable with her on her side then on her back. But that is just me.

no, mine doesn't have a bassinet setting. We chose this one...

We need the cover to keep the cats out.
So a blanket over the baby tucked in under the armpits? I thought you weren't supposed to put anything in there with the baby though.

I have heard the same thing before, but people have been tucking kids in with blankets since the dawn of time I just make it nice and snug. Especially since baby this time around will be small during the winter, I don't see how he could have no blankey through it all. When Elle was little I used a thinner type fleece blanket and then used the crib comforter, both I found were very breathable material and not too heavy. I just say do whatever you feel comfortable with.

When Ayden was first born and couldn't move around much at night, we put him in the crib, and then pulled the covers up to mid chest and then stretched the covers tight across him and tucked them into the edges of the crib matriss so it was nice and snug. Once he started moving around though there really isn't much you can do to keep the blankets in place and I think a thin blanket is fine, or you can get one of those... i can't remember what they are called, but it's like a blanket/overall set that you zip baby up in. Ayden hated that, and soon started to hate covers. He will hardly even let me put a sheet on him now...

Except for those of us in the most southern areas, we'll be having cool weather babies. They'll NEED blankets.
If you choose knitted blankets or loosely woven ones made of breathable material rather than heavy comforters or densely felted blankets (if you look carefully you'll find that many blankets nowdays are made of packed and fused synthetic fibers that allow no airflow), and either swaddle the baby or tuck them snugly around the baby you are unlikely to have any problems. The knitted ones, especially handknitted, are best at staying tucked since they stretch and mold as you wrap and tuck.
By the time most babies are old enough to kick free of their blankets they are usually old enough to either wave their arms enough to uncover their face should the loosened blanket get over their heads OR they will wake and protest until you come and free them.

For those older, wiggly babies who won't stay covered but wake to protest being cold I love those fleece baby bags. I keep them in that sort of nightwear until they absolutely grow too, too large. Not only do bags keep them warm, but they also keep them from being able to climb the crib rails when I'm using a crib.

That's what I'll be using. I have a couple already and some on my registry. I think I'll feel much safer with him in one of these so he can't kick the blankets around. I think they're a great alternative if you are a worry-wart like me!
