I'm not an incredibly frequent poster anyway, so I'm not sure if anyone noticed or not, but I haven't been around lately because we moved and were having problems with our internet, but it's working now so I'll be on more. I missed a lot! I got so used to checking on here everyday that almost a weeks worth of posts took forever to go through! Oh well...anyway, I have a question about changing tables. How necessary do you think they are? I registered for one, and was just assuming you needed one, but my mom and grandma have been telling me they are not necessary. They said I would use it for a couple of weeks and then change him on the floor/wherever's most convenient and that he would ougrow it fairly quickly anyway. What do y'all think? I was kind of just thinking of using it if someone bought it for me and not worrying about getting it myself if no one buys one.
im not buying a changing table one actually came with our pack and play but even if it didnt we wouldnt waste our money. My mom always just changed all us kids wherever it was convenient she didnt want to have to run to our room to change us everytime so she would just put a blanket down on the floor or couch or her bed and change us like that i will be doing the same thing.
This is my third baby and I have never wanted one until now. Aout 18 months ago I happened to be at Goodwill and saw this great dresser/changing table that doesn't look like a changing tabel unless you ahve the half shelf down. I can see many uses for it in my house after it is not a changing table/dresser, and it is well made and may well last till my oldest moves out.
I have used the bed, the floor, whatever in the past. I think it will be nice to have a storage area and things in one place, now that I have 3 young people's things to keep track of!

I never used one and won't be using one this time. I can't see myself running up ten stairs everytime to change the baby. I just put a pile of diapers and wipes and change pad in my coffee table alcoves
As a nanny, I used one ALL the time. I never changed the kid on the floor or anything, and it was always pretty convienient to have diapers and everything in one spot when you needed it. So we'll be getting one - we don't have any stairs in our house, so it's not that gigantic of a deal, either.
I've been told by my cousins and family that they never used their changing tables and to be honest, I probably won't either, at least not until he's in his crib near the changing table. I can't imagine getting up in the middle of the night to go into the other room to change him when we'll both be in my room! I am getting one, however, b/c the one that comes with teh furniture is a dresser / changing table and I could really use the drawer space, not to mention it will grow with him b/c it doesn't look like a changing table. I don't think you really need it unless you need the extra storage space. JMHO
You really don't need one, I mean if you have a pack and play, don't they come with a little section to change the baby on? You could also get a portable changing pad and just change her/him on the bed or something. I mean, they aren't a big necessity...really they're an extra item. I wasn't going to get one until we found a cheap one at a garage sale.
After much consideration, I'm not going to have a changing table... at least not at first. If I find myself needing on down the line, then I might get one, or convert a dresser into a changing table. In fact, our crib has a changing table attached to it, and I'm not even using that... it's just not looking like it's goint to be convienent. So, from my point of view, it's not a must have... people have been changing diapers for generations without all the luxuries.

I had one with my first child and all it did was collect everything I didn't feel like putting away!
My son got changed anywhere we happened to be most of the time.
The only thing that was really helpful was all the diaper stuff (lotions, powder, wipes, etc) was in one spot, but I can put that basket of stuff on her dresser or anywhere really.

I like having all the diapering things handy in one place. But the furniture meant to be a changing table is next to useless -- too small and too flimsy for the long-term.
IMO the very best option is that woman's dresser with the mirror that I keep mentioning. Everything, including clean clothes, is handy in one spot and the surface is large enough to change even a jumbo-size toddler or preschooler in due time.
I never liked the awkwardness of kneeling on the floor and certainly never wanted to be always rewashing the bedspread or couch cushion covers after the contents of a "disaster diaper" got all over everything or "the fountain of youth" appeared unexpectedly.
I have to say, we use ours ALL the time. If we try to change Rachel anywhere but a changing table, she thinks it's fair game to play "you can't pin me down". However, she has learned that she is not allowed to goof off if we're changing her on the table. I thought for sure, we'd get sick of the table by now, so I just bought a cheapo one that only holds up to 25 pounds. However, now that Rachel is almost 25 pounds, I am looking for another one we can used until she's potty-trained.

I have a dresser from Babies R Us that has the changing area right on top. When they outgrow the changing area-its still a dresser! I love it and use the changing area ALL THE TIME. I did not have a changing table w/my first two kids and am surprised how often I use it.
Since you'll need a dresser for the baby anyway-I'd recommend gettng somethign like this.
We are gonna use his dresser/changing table for upstairs in his bedroom and his pack and play changer for downstairs so we don't have to go up and down all the time. I have a cat and a dog and my cousin had her 8 wk old over yesterday and they were way too interested in poopy diapers to change him on the floor. My cat feels the need to clean up all messes so I want to change him away from the animals.
i'm not buying one. I used a spare desk we had for Ayden, and the only time I used it was when I was feeding him in the middle of the night. That only lasted a couple of weeks. After that I changed him on the couch, on the floor, on the kitchen table. LOL!! I was to lazy to go all the way back to his bedroom. I don't even have the spare desk this time to put in the baby's room, but I don't think I'll be to dissapointed about it. If you actually use them, they are great, and they look nice, but really not nessary.

I never had a change table either. Here is what I did instead. When I had my first two children, I kept a pretty basket full of supplies (change pad, diapers, creams, wipes, powder, and even a change of onesie) in the room where we spent most of our time. I usually changed the girls on the floor, but sometimes used a bed. I now have two floors that are in use in my house, so I plan to have 2 baskets prepared. That way I can change the babies wherever the mess occurs.
I've had a changing table since my first, and I wouldn't do without.
I find a lot of change tables I see are small, which is fine if your baby is, but chances are that you will still be changing your child when they are 2 or older, so you want one that is a bit bigger.
I like the extra storage, plus I like having all my stuff in the same place.
