Okay, so there are probably lots of things that are a no-no for pregnant women as far as eating is concerned. Does anyone know any others besides these that I've heard of?

Unpasteurized soft cheeses
MSG's
deli meat?? not sure on this one
all seafood except certain fishes (not sure which fishes are okay?)
anything undercooked - meats or eggs

I'm sure there are more, but I can't think right now. Anyone want to confirm these listed or add any? My Dr. appt isn't until next week, so I want to make sure to stay away from anything bad til I know for sure what I can and can't eat!!

I grabbed this from http://pregnancy.about.com/cs/nutritioninp...abavoidfood.htm. Hope it answers your questions!

Don't Eat:

Raw meat such as sushi, seafood, rare or uncooked beef, or poultry because of the risk of contamination with coliform bacteria, toxoplasmosis, and salmonella.

Raw eggs, or foods containing raw egg such as Caesar dressing, mayonnaise, homemade ice cream or custard, unpasteurized eggnog, or Hollandaise sauce because raw eggs may be contaminated with salmonella.

Soft cheese such as blue cheese, feta, Brie, Camambert, and Latin-American soft white cheeses such as queso blanco and queso fresco because they may harbor harmful bacteria.

Fish containing accumulated levels of mercury in their fatty tissues such as shark, swordfish, king mackerel, tilefish.

When a pregnant woman consumes large amounts of mercury, her baby may suffer brain damage resulting in developmental delays (for example, delays in learning to walk or talk).

Fish containing high levels of an industrial pollutant called polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in their fatty tissues such as bluefish and striped bass, and freshwater fish such as salmon, pike, trout, walleye from contaminated lakes and rivers. According to the March of Dimes, consumption of large amounts of PCBs by pregnant women is linked to decreased attention, memory, and IQ in their babies. Check with your local Health Department to determine which fish in your area are safe to eat.

Exercise Caution:

According to the March of Dimes, deli meats have led to outbreaks of a form of food poisoning called Listeriosis, that is particularly harmful to fetuses. While the risk is low, you may want to thoroughly reheat deli meats to an internal temperature of 165 degrees (including hot dogs) or avoid them altogether.

Minimize the amount of liver you eat. According to the March of Dimes, animal liver contains very high levels of vitamin A. While vitamin A is good for you, women who consume too much may risk a higher incidence of birth defects in their babies (however, studies are not conclusive). Since you're probably already taking prenatal vitamins and eating other vitamin A-containing foods, it's better to be safe and not consume liver on a regular basis. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recommended has that pregnant woman maintain their vitamin A intake around 8,000 IU and that vitamin A be taken in the form of beta-carotene, which is not considered toxic.

According to the FDA, consumption of artificial sweeteners is safe for the general public. No studies show conclusively that it's harmful to consume artificial sweeteners during pregnancy. However, this is a personal decision, and for your peace of mind--and just to be on the safe side--you might decide to limit your consumption of artificial sweeteners during pregnancy. Instead, substitute fruit juice with sparkling water when you need a light, refreshing drink.

According to a 1999 U.S. Health and Human Services press release, raw sprouts have led to some incidents of salmonella outbreaks. They advise that pregnant women eat sprouts that are cooked, or avoid eating them altogether.

i had 3 scrambled eggs this morning... I had no idea you're not supposed to eat them. It won't hurt the baby though will it? As long as I don't eat them again? Man I don't know how I'm ever going to learn everything I need to about being pregnant!

Scrambled eggs are fine... it's the sunnyside up (where the egg isn't flipped over to cook on top), that you should stay away from.

Popping in from Jan DDC. Scrambled eggs are just fine ladies. Just remember to cook them well. Eggs were the only thing I was able to keep down my 1st trimester. I must have eaten 10 dozen or more eggs cooked every different way. My lil guy is healthy as can be and I am suprised he isn't a little egg head. I also cheated and ate a lot of deli meat so do not worry if you do every once in awhile. And abotu fish. The smaller the fish the less mercury. I stuck to shrimp. Fish is actually healthy to eat during pregnancy but I would stay away from tuna and anything big.

I was told it's safe to have up to 12oz. of tuna a week. I crave tuna sandwiches big time when I'm pregnant, so I was happy to hear that! lol

Hi, popping in from May DDC.

You are also supposed to avoid any foods with nitrates in them - hot dogs, sausages, beef jerky, read the ingredients. Don't know why they're bad but they are ... Also, aspartame, it's an artificial sweetener. It's okay in small amounts like in a yogurt or something but not okay in diet sodas and stuff. :-)

Congrats to you all and hope you have happy, healthy pregnancies!!!

Hi..popping over from July's DDC.

Not sure on all of it, but for fish I got a pretty good list from my OB since where we are fish/seafood is a way of life.

She said that all shellfish (as long as it is cooked throughoughly) is safe and most ocean (deep sea) fish are as well, but to limit it to 2 servings per week. Tuna and shark you should avoid as they tend to have a higher mercury count than others (as well as cuda). Also, she said to be wary of the reef fish such as grouper and hogfish because they can have higher counts of whatever it is reef fish get (they are eating "trash" off the reefs so unless you are sure of where your fish is coming from and the conditions you should just avoid those).

I have NO clue on lake/fresh water fish as they aren't available here, but I do remember reading that salmon is fine but there was definitly a list of nono's from the lake ones (guess if you are positive of the pollution level in your lakes then its ok?)

Also..NO SUSHI :-( This is the biggest let down for me!

Oh..on tuna, the canned stuff is okay as long as you have no more than 1 6oz. can a week (not sure why canned is okay but fresh isn't? Hmmm!
