Does your toddler play any computer or video games? If so, what games/ systems? What are your thoughts on computer and video game playing for kids?

Not yet but I wouldn't have any issues with it. I think moderation is key.

Eric doesn't, he really doesn't have the patience or understand for it yet. IMO, though, video games are like anything else, perfectly fine in moderation.

I hate them. I have several cousins (mostly boys) that are completely addicted to them (little kids) and they take them everywhere, ignore the family entirely and just zone in on these silly games. They never want to play outside, do no imaginary play whatsoever, and most of the fighting in their homes revolve around these games. They want to eat with them, sleep with them, breathe with them. Now, I get that everything is good in moderation, I just worry that kids are getting addicted to these kinds of things. Do you know they actually have competitions for texting now? And there is now a name for an addiction to cell phones and texting. The modern world full of computers and button touching instant gratification is a scary place as far as I am concerned. I will be pretty limited when it comes to this kind of stuff. I am not a fan of tv's and computers in bedrooms and any video games in my home will be attached to the tv so they are not portable. None whatsoever at the cottage. Because I am old fashioned and sick and mean about stuff like that. I think using the imagination is a key part of growing up and I feel like video games and computers suck the imagination right out of kids. Or maybe just replace it. But I dont like it. Thats my story and I am sticking to it, lol.

Kaija pretty much summed up my thoughts on them lol! I'm sure we'll have them, having 2 boys kinda guarantees it, but I'll be the mean mommy that strictly limits how much they can play them.

When we go to the library on Thursdays she gets to play on the toddler computers. She LOVES it. She amazed me the first time she played because she actually was able to use the mouse without instruction. They have some great programs. She really like the dora one and curious george one.

Elyssa has the diego safari rescue for the wii and will be getting the Dora snow princess. I don't really have anything against video games (it would be hypocritical of me if I did since I play them a lot myself) but she doesn't play them very often because of the example Kaija gave... DH talks about his playing video games as a kid and it seems all of his childhood memories centre around video games...

we do have a playstation 2 that is hooked up to the main tv in the living room so they are only allowed to play it very moderately because of it being the main tv for the house that everyone watches. we used to have it hooked up to a smaller tv in my room but that tv broke. when we first got the playstation, they wanted to play it alot, but now they don't ask to play it as often. they will play it if they are home sick and no one else is using the tv or the weather outside is bad and then they will take turns playing it together and giving each other helpful hints on different games, etc. I try not to allow violent games, etc. but occasionally i have found one that manages to slip past until i get hold of it. mainly they are games like spyro(about a little dragon), pacman world, snowmachine racing, and others similiar to spyro that are more adventure type games. we do have handheld gameboys, but they haven't been played in a long time and were bought off ebay to entertain the kids on the flight to and from orlando. occasionally i will download a game for them to play on the computer or they can play the games that we have bought for it. I always try to find ones that will teach them something while they play it and they have to earn the privilege of playing games on the computer. overall though, I prefer that they use their imagination to come up with ways to entertain themselves, etc. whenever the weather is nice, they are encouraged to be outside, and if they can't be than i try to get them to read or do something else creative for majority of time before computer or video games are brought out. lately though, i have been the one that has spent time playing computer games while trying to stay off my feet during my pregnancy. towards evening time, i will sit and relax and play computer games like mahjong or puzzle type ones that work my brain but allow me to destress and relax.

nope, no games for us yet. I wouldn't be opposed to them later on, in moderation... but not this young for our family.

I remember the Atari games and the early Nintendo days. My kids call me ancient because I remember back before vcrs. When dh and I were dating we used to play atari games at his parents house sometimes with his little brother during our dates.

I played Atari at a friends house occasionally, but we had Coleco Vision, and it drove me nuts that my friends always wanted to come to our house and play it, so I used to pretend it was broken so we could "really" play, lol.

I loved Pitfall. LOL! And hated Yar's Revenge, even though it was my mom's favorite When we played, it was family time, which is how I hope to introduce video games to the boys rather than something they just sit and do by themselves. Actually, I started video games on a Commodore 64 (how many of you played on THOSE? ) - all 3 of us would sit down and play the adventure games that you had to read and type in what you wanted to do. We would talk through options, and they would encourage me to try to read everything to them. Of course, we did many other things together too, but it is one of those fond family time memories!

I personally am not ready for Gracieann to play video/computer games. When she is older and in moderation that is fine. However DH is getting a Wii from his parents for Christmas and I am anxious to see what she thinks!
