Wondering who here is breastfeeding and what is your primary reason for choosing breast over formula?
Breastfeeding exclusively for a little over a month and my primary reason is that it is good for my baby. My two older formula fed children both have really bad allergies and got alot of colds while they were babies. My son had actually had his first cold at 3 weeks old. Secondary reason is that it burns alotta calories! I plan to breastfeed until around 9 months and then start weaning which is when I would normally start weaning from a bottle anyway.
1. it's free
2. it's easier (or to me it is...don't have to mess with bottles)
3. it burns calories (I was already back to my pre-pregnancy weight at my 6 week checkup and I eat like a pig!)
4. it's better for my baby.
My goal was 6 months, but I think I'll probably go to more like 9-10 months as long as things keep going as smoothly as they have so far. I honestly don't have any problems with formula. I know formula babies that are just as happy and healthy as breastfed babies. I guess my main motivation is why should I pay for something when I already have it?!?
I'm still breastfeeding as well. I tried switching to formula a few weeks back (i wanted my body back.) but Ivy didn't tolerate it(milk based or soy). She never got more then 1 in 3 feedings from formula so I didn't have a big drop in supply and it caught up fast. My main reasons for starting were as stated in the other posts. Wieght loss (I was under pre-pregnancy wieght in 2.5 weeks) it's free, better start for baby, ect.. I'll prolly do it until she weans, as she didn't do well with the formula.
I am breast feeding and loving it....for all the same reasons you ladies are, I am 7 pounds lighter than I was when I got pregnant, thats nice. and I love the bonding time, although I know you can get that bottle feeding too....I am so impressed with what my body can do,
I'm breastfeeding, the other ladies have pretty much hit the main reasons. I'd like to breastfeed until close to 1 yr, hopefully I won't have supply problems after I go back to work in August.

Pretty much the same reasons its better for Rhiley & its also better for me... not only does it help you lose weight it also decreases the risks of alot of cancers. I love breastfeeding... the only time she gets a bottle is when I pump & we got out somewhere... or when she stays at home w/ her grandparents while I go to the gym.
Second, I want to give her the best start at life possible--my mom smoked with me, and I was bottle fed, and I have allergies, got sick a ton.. and did poor in school, struggled with my weight etc.. Im not saying this is caused by the bottle, but my daughter is certainly getting a healther start than I did... since I quit smoking too.
i do! my biggest reasons are for her health, and because i'm very cheap and refuse to buy formula again. no matter when i become pregnant--- hopefully sooner, rather than later-- I intend to nurse right up until she can switch to cow's milk. plus, i just love holding her close and being the one who makes her grow. I really miss that about pregnancy, so it's nice that i can continue it, in a way.
I actually didnt decide to breastfeed until he was born. I like the bonding time with Dane, its FREE and that is good since DH is in a transition from a job and I am not working, its easier during the night and everything not having to fuss with anything but the baby, he eats really well and I have a good constant supply. I planned on 6 months but we will see how it goes it is going great so far...
I am so sad reading this I really wanted to BF but my milk never really came in, I have a very low supply but I feed her a few times a day with the little supply I have. When I actually hear her get a gulp I am soo happy. She loves BFing which makes it even more SAD for me (((

Have you tried oatmeal - since I started having oatmeal for breakfast or a couple oatmeal cookies as a snack, I have an abundance of milk all of the sudden! SO much so I'm able to feed my baby and pump about 6-8 ounces a day right now so it has worked out really well for me. I'm kinda shy to nurse her at church so I bring her EBM in a playtex nurser.
i am bf'ing exclusively and i do it for all of the above mentioned reasons... it helps me to retain focus on her and makes me slow down, too. i do not know how a working mom would do this... my hat's off.. if i had had to return to work, i don't know how i would have managed to bf/pump at work. so i attribute our success here to being able to totally focus on bf'ing.

BTW, Rebecca, you mentioned your two older children...how old are they? Boys or girls? Just curious!

I'm breastfeeding. I want to do it until about 9 months. I think it's good for the baby and a great bonding experience. It also frees up a lot of money that I can use on baby clothes and toys for her!

Thank you so much for the suggestion, I may do a post to see what else has worked for people trying to increase their milk. I am going to definetly try that!!!

it can be demanding and time consuming, but all the benifits out weigh the hassle for me.
i hope to be able to breastfeed for over a year.. as long as lily wants.
and Jeneane... there is soo much you can eat to incease your supply, and if you are interested, you should look into it..because i truly believe it is possible for you to produce what your baby needs. especially if you and her both like it! dont give up quite yet.. i am sure you could research and ask some mamas about it~ good luck!
