Popping in from Sept. DDC.....Well I set the crib up yesterday and now my cat wants to sleep in it. I have been trying to keep him out of it because of cat hair and such and because I dont want him to get used to sleeping in there. My question is, how did your cat react to a crib and how did he do after the baby came? Did he try to sleep with him? Im really nervous about this, not really that he will suffocate the baby, but that he will step on him. My jinxie likes to step on people for some reason, instead of just walking around them so if anyone has any advice or just some input I would really be thankful!!!

before i had my son, i remember a bunch of people in my DDC talking about this exact situation. *thinks hard* i can't remember exactly what they did. i'm thinking they put something sticky, like lines of tape, in the crib, so that when the cat went in, it jumped right back out. argh, i just can't remember. i'll try and look something up for ya, hang on...

oops, wasn't tape, it was FOIL. here's a link, I just searched "cats baby crib" on google:

Line the mattress with aluminum foil for about a week. Every time your cat jumps in there, he'll land on that and hate it!

Or you could have a weird cat like mine who doesn't mind. LOL When our oldest was born 10 years ago, we had to put a simple screen door up in her bedroom doorway to keep the cat out. It had a spring tension thingee on it that kept it closed even if he tried to paw it open. We've used that screen door 3x now and that cat has never gotten passed it.

You can get a simple wood frame screen door like mine at Lowe's or Home Depot for about $20.

SCREEN DOOR! What a great idea. When I tried, the foil didn't work for my cat and I have just started thinking about this issue more because my little guy will br transitioned out of our room in a couple of months. The crib is currently covered in cat hair! I am going to do this.

We did the foil thing for a few months before Sam was born and also sprayed them with water whenever we caught them in the crib, it worked. They haven't even tried to get in the crib when Sam's in there. In fact, they don't seem interested in him in the least bit at all, now that I think about it. They sniff him and walk away, that's as close as they get.

Babies R Us sells a net type thing you can put over the crib, so my cat has not shown interest in getting into the crib, so hope it stays that way.

I have a cat but I don't have this problem... my cat has never tried to get into Joshua's crib, and she hates him. I think it has something to do with Joshua kicking her off the couch when I was pregnant (yes he kicked her so hard she flew off the couch).

All I've heard of is the FOIL method and the spraying water trick.

I have kitties, and both of them were sniffing the babyes moses basket. i just squirted them with water and that taught them. they wont go near the baby or his things though they will just sniff his blanket out of curiosity. what i did as well so no hair would get into the moses basket is i covered it with a giant blanket so incase they did hop in, at least they would only get the blanket and not get any hair in the basket itself.

Wow! Thank you all for your input, I am going to try the foil first. Hopefully that works!!! If not I read on a few sites that if you cant get the cat to stop sleeping in the crib that most of the time when the baby is born they will just stop because they dont want to be that close to the baby. Its just mainly the cat hair! We have a yellow carebear crib sheet...and a black cat haha so you can imagine what it looks like! He doesnt shed very much but even just one hair is noticable on that sheet!! Thank you all for your suggestions! I will be trying them so hopefully Mr Jinx gets spooked!
